NCHD – Robotic Surgery

Job Purpose

The NCHD in Robotic Surgery reports to the Lead NCHD and plays a key role in providing expert bedside assistance, supporting the robotic programme, managing care pathways and engaging in specialised training.

The role bridges technical expertise with clinical care, utilises robotic platforms such as the Da Vinci system to enhance precision and improve patient outcomes in key surgical specialities.

The role is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of best medical practice. As a key member of the Surgical team, the NCHD in Robotic Surgery will demonstrate professional clinical skills and facilitate effective communication with colleagues in the hospital. The position requires a collaborative approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.

Job Background/Context

The Hermitage Clinic is a private hospital providing a full range of medical and surgical care across a broad spectrum of specialities. The role duties include:

• To lead, organise and co\-ordinate the work of the Robotic Surgery programme ensuring highest standards of patient care for all patients attending/admitted to the Hermitage Clinic.


• Acting as the primary bedside assistant, including patient positioning, port placement, docking the robot, instrument exchanges, camera cleaning, and suturing.


• Managing emergency situations, including the ability to rapidly "undock" the robot for open conversion.


• Ensuring robotic equipment is prepared, operating correctly, and managing consumables


• Conducting patient assessments, reviewing imaging, and obtaining consent for robotic procedures


• Monitoring patients for complications by providing care on the ward and managing discharge.


• Collaborating with consultants, theatre staff, and nurses to ensure a seamless patient journey


• Develop towards participating / participate in robotic procedures as first robotic assistant, providing skilled and consistent assistance within the operating theatre under the direction of a consultant surgeon.


• Display skill and dexterity in surgical technique and the use of surgical instruments and robotic equipment


• Arrange appropriate pre\- and post\-operative investigations as part of the multidisciplinary team to enhance patient safety, to facilitate patient\-centred care and contribute to the smooth running of the operating lists


• Support, encourage and advise clinical team, by the provision of specialist knowledge and advice in the care of patients before, during and after surgery.


• Liaise with medical, theatre, ward and clerical staff on relevant issues including theatre lists to support coherent service provision and smooth patient journey


• Contribute to the clinical care of the postoperative patient including blood sampling detection of surgical problems and liaison with the surgical team.


• Identify acute deterioration of patients and have knowledge of national early warning scores.


• Promote effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team in relation to the management of surgical patients, including actively participating in theatre safety briefings before every list.


• To work with Consultants on clinical matters and to monitor the volume and mix of cases treated against the core standards for JCI, working where necessary with the CEO, Director of Clinical Governance or Medical Advisory Committee.


• To establish and maintain teamwork and co\-operation with the multidisciplinary team i.e. Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiology etc. to ensure maximum benefit from co\-ordinated care.


• To maintain and develop the highest evidence based clinical and professional standards.


• To keep abreast of new developments, skills, technology, and current literature in order to initiate and respond to changes in the work environment, e.g. data analysis, clinical audit, research, etc. and to meet current CME requirements


• To fully embrace and utilise the Hospitals Information and Communications Technology including Meditech, PACS and all other applications


• To keep policies and procedures under review, with regular audit, and revise as required in the light of changing service needs.


• To establish and maintain links with other private and public hospital centres, both nationally and internationally, in order to promote collaboration in professional development and research.


• To engage in the coordination, supervision and teaching of medical students attached to the hospital

Clinical Assessment of Patients

• Patients requiring admission/readmission and/or as warranted by an unexpected change in their clinical condition.


• Patients attending Day Care and Day of Surgery areas will be reviewed as appropriate


• Patient assessment should comprise of:


• Appropriate history and clinical examination,


• Appropriate investigations (e.g. CXR, ECG, Lab work\-up),


• Procedural activity (e.g. blood cultures, IV cannulations and infusions, catheterisation),


• Prescribing drug therapies or other appropriate services including physiotherapy, dietician, etc.,


• Ensure that there are detailed notes in medical records including proper documentation and discharge summaries, where appropriate e.g. transfers, convalescence, and rehabilitation.


• Liaising with Consultants in charge and Senior Nursing Colleagues.

• Prescribing may be required as warranted by a change in clinical condition, analgesic requirement, or as a courtesy on behalf of the Consultant staff.


• To actively participate in relevant Hospital committees and task force groups.


• To closely liaise with all Hospital Consultants.


• Participate in compulsory Hospital based training i.e. Fire and Manual Handling renewal of ACLS/PALS when required etc.


• To provide teaching sessions to other RMO's, undergraduate Nurses and medical students as required.


• To carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time and at the discretion of the CEO and or Director of Clinical Governance.

• Contribute to the requirements of the Medical Council practice professional development.


• Take personal responsibility for own professional development and keep up to date with evidence\-based practice and research.


• Attend and participate in staff development programmes on an ongoing basis and sharing knowledge with other staff members.


• Assist with the orientation and induction of new staff and be available to provide orientation as deemed necessary, helping them to integrate as members of the Unit team.


• Identify and inform the Learning and Education Team of any training and professional development requirements.


• Attend all mandatory training days and ensure that all mandatary training is in date.


• Comply with all HR system and policy requirements.

• Ensure compliance with all relevant Hermitage Clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and relevant legislation and regulatory requirements.


• Participate in the continuous review and evaluation of policies, guidelines and existing practices through regular audit programmes and review engaging with the multi\-disciplinary team where required.


• Assist in promoting a culture of continuous quality improvement across the department.


• Be aware of the core objectives, standards and key performance indicators for the service and contribute to the monitoring of performance against these standards.


• Participate in the requirements of the hospital's accreditation process.


• Participate in the requirements of the hospital's risk management programme.


• Promote the delivery of a high standard of care to all patients. Encourage evidence\-based practice and assist in the dissemination and implementation of research findings.


• Work with members of the Multidisciplinary team in devising Standard Operating Procedures for the development of the Unit.


• Assist in ensuring a culture of safety, promoting positive reporting of incidents and near misses; investigate and take remedial action on incidents or near misses

Knowledge / Experience

• MB BCh BAO or equivalent recognised by the Irish Medical Council


• Full registration with the Irish Medical Council


• Significant post registration experience in the practice of surgery


• Knowledge of theatre environment and specialist surgery


• Knowledge and developed skills with DaVincii XI platform or equivalent


• BLS / ACLS


• Minimum five years post qualification experience
