Multi\-Skilled Maintenance Engineer (Mechanical Bias)

We are seeking a proactive Multi\-Skilled Maintenance Engineer with a strong mechanical bias to support a fast\-paced manufacturing operation. The role is responsible for maintaining plant and production equipment to maximise uptime, improve reliability, and ensure all machinery operates safely, efficiently, and in line with production demands on a site operating under DSEAR and ATEX regulations.

Working Pattern

The role operates on a Monday to Friday shift pattern, covering dayshift, backshift, and nightshift, and may also involve planned maintenance shutdowns and participation in an on\-call or breakdown support rota depending on site requirements.

Role Purpose

To deliver effective planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance across production and site assets, with a primary focus on mechanical systems, while supporting basic electrical fault finding and improvement activity. The postholder will play a key role in reducing downtime, improving equipment performance, and contributing to a safe, high\-performing manufacturing environment, including compliance within hazardous areas where DSEAR and ATEX controls apply.

Key Responsibilities

· Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on manufacturing and site equipment.

· Diagnose and repair mechanical faults quickly and effectively to minimise downtime.

· Maintain and repair equipment such as conveyors, pumps, motors, gearboxes, bearings, pneumatics, hydraulics, valves, and production machinery.

· Work safely on equipment and systems within hazardous areas, ensuring all maintenance activity complies with site DSEAR and ATEX requirements, isolation standards, and permit controls.

· Respond promptly to breakdowns and communicate status clearly to production and engineering teams.

· Complete maintenance documentation accurately, including work orders, parts used, downtime records, and handovers.

· Identify recurring issues and contribute to root cause analysis and long\-term corrective actions.

· Support machine installation, modification, and continuous improvement projects.

· Ensure all work is completed in line with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.

· Work collaboratively with operations, engineering colleagues, and contractors to maintain plant performance.

· Promote good housekeeping and safe systems of work, including permit controls and isolations where required.

· Contribute to improving reliability, efficiency, and overall equipment performance.

Skills and Experience

· Proven maintenance engineering experience within a fast\-paced manufacturing, FMCG, process, or industrial environment.

· Strong mechanical fault\-finding and repair capability across a broad range of plant equipment.

· Working knowledge of mechanical systems including pumps, bearings, chains, sprockets, conveyors, hydraulics, pneumatics, and gearboxes.

· Basic electrical competence, including safe fault finding and replacement of components such as motors, sensors, switches, and contactors.

· Experience working to strict health and safety standards within a DSEAR and ATEX controlled manufacturing environment is highly desirable.

· Awareness of hazardous area equipment, safe isolation, permit\-to\-work systems, and compliance requirements relating to explosive atmospheres.

· Experience using Shire CMMS or a similar computerised maintenance management system, with accurate completion of maintenance records and work orders.

· Ability to prioritise workload effectively in a high\-pressure, fast\-moving environment.

· Good understanding of root cause analysis, problem solving, and continuous improvement techniques.

· Strong communication skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Experience supporting shutdowns, overhauls, and equipment upgrades is desirable.

· Welding, fabrication, or machining experience would be advantageous.

Qualifications

· Time\-served engineering apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience.

· NVQ Level 3, City \& Guilds, HNC, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Maintenance Engineering.

· Electrical qualification or multi\-skilled training would be beneficial.

· Knowledge of health and safety requirements relevant to manufacturing environments.

· Awareness of DSEAR and ATEX requirements, hazardous area working, or relevant site process safety controls would be advantageous.

· Additional training in continuous improvement, welding, fabrication, PLC awareness, or hazardous area compliance would be advantageous.
