Job Summary
---------------
An opportunity for a permanent full\-time band 6 midwife within the Fetal Medicine Unit (FMU) at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has arisen. We are a busy tertiary unit based at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), specialising in supporting pregnant people and their families when an anomaly has been identified, this may be at a scan or through the antenatal screening programme.
The Fetal Medicine Midwives are the core of the service working alongside the specialist consultant obstetricians to provide an enhanced midwifery pathway for the pregnant people and their families accessing FMU. We coordinate care with the wider MDT e.g., neonates, surgeons, hospice, family care team, local hospital screening/fetal medicine units and other specialist services just to name a few. The Fetal Medicine midwife will require excellent counselling skills and an ability to change and adapt the care provided as we walk alongside pregnant people and their families during a difficult and emotional journey.
Why you should join our Team
--------------------------------
Our Fetal Medicine team consists of specialist consultants, sub spec trainees, specialist midwives, midwifery support workers and administration assistants. We all work collaboratively from processing the referrals all the way until the pregnant person is discharged from our service. Although this can be a highly emotive area to work in, we support one another to provide an exceptional service for pregnant people and their families and take pride in the positive feedback we receive knowing that we have made a difference to their journey.
Our Fetal Medicine service runs Monday to Friday 8\-6, we have a hub within LGI antenatal clinic where we are based and we oversee the scan lists that run each day alongside the midwifery support workers. Our working day includes counselling (both face to face and over the phone), supporting the consultant with invasive procedures (e.g., CVS and amniocentesis), coordinating care and appointments for service users by linking in with the wider MDT and giving specialist midwifery advice to our Leeds colleagues and wider referring hospital teams.
What you will bring to the role
-----------------------------------
We are looking for a band 6 midwife who is a professional and dynamic individual with excellent communication skills and can prioritise empathy and compassion to the pregnant people and families within their care. You will be able to communicate effectively with in a multidisciplinary service and have excellent time management and IT skills, along with working collaboratively as part of a specialist team. As part of our Fetal Medicine midwifery team they will have full specialist training and have a drive to expand their knowledge within the service wanting to provide evidence\-based patient led care.
As we work regularly in stressful situations dealing with poor outcomes, invasive procedures and TOP’s, along with counselling families when unexpected findings are identified on scan, the team have psychological support and team debriefing to protect their emotional wellbeing. It is therefore important that the successful candidate is able to provide excellent quality care and have the ability to have difficult conversations whilst providing patient centred care.
