Role Overview

Reporting to the Technical Principal, the Mechatronics Engineer will play a central role in the development of our next\-generation inkjet printing systems. This is a multidisciplinary role requiring a strong foundation in mechanical design, electronics, and software development. You will work on the architecture and integration of complex mechatronic systems, collaborating closely with mechanical, electronics, and software engineers to deliver robust, flexible platforms for research use.

This is a hands\-on, lab\-based role that offers the opportunity to contribute to the full product development lifecycle—from concept through to prototype and pre\-commercialisation.

Key Responsibilities

\- Lead research, development and prototyping of innovative engineering solutions.

\- Collaborate closely with internal team members and external stakeholders.

\- Identify problems early and implement effective, practical solutions.

\- Design and integrate mechanical, electrical, and software components for inkjet printing systems.

\- Develop and test motion control systems, sensors, actuators, and embedded control logic.

\- Collaborate with software engineers to implement control algorithms and user interfaces.

\- Support the development of modular printer architectures and experimental modules.

\- Conduct system\-level testing, debugging, and validation.

\- Maintain technical documentation including schematics, CAD models, and test reports.

\- Assist in transitioning prototypes to production\-ready systems.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a proactive and collaborative engineer with a passion for building complex systems. You should be comfortable working across disciplines and managing your time effectively across multiple projects. You will have the autonomy to lead your own research and mechatronic system design, from initial concept through to testing and implementation.

Essential Skills and Experience

\- Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

\- Experience in designing and integrating mechatronic systems.

\- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360\).

\- Familiarity with PCB design and embedded systems.

\- Experience with motion control, sensors, and actuators.

\- Programming experience in C/C\+\+, Python, or similar.

\- High attention to detail and commitment to quality and precision.

\- Ability to take ownership of projects and work independently.

\- Strong problem\-solving skills with a professional and client\-focused approach.

\- Technical report writing with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable Skills

\- Experience with inkjet printing systems or other precision hardware

\- Familiarity with GUI development and control software

\- Knowledge of additive manufacturing technologies.

\- Experience working in fast\-paced or small team environments

Salary and Location

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Location: Nottingham, UK (on\-site, lab\-based role)
Start Date: Within 3 months (must have the right to work in the UK)
