As a Mechanical Engineer in building services, you will manage the design and implementation of building systems, collaborating with project teams to deliver efficient and compliant designs. You will take responsibility for mechanical design tasks, work closely with clients, and ensure project deliverables align with UK building regulations, standards, and sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop mechanical design solutions for HVAC, plumbing, ventilation and other mechanical systems in full compliance with UK Building Regulations (particularly Parts F, G, L, and P) and relevant British Standards.
- Ensure designs meet Building Regulations Part F (Ventilation) requirements for adequate fresh air provision, extract ventilation rates, and indoor air quality standards.
- Apply Building Regulations Part G (Sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency) including water supply systems, drainage, hot water safety (legionella prevention), and water efficiency measures.
- Implement Building Regulations Part L (Conservation of fuel and power) requirements for energy efficiency in building services, including heating system controls, insulation of pipework and ductwork, and commissioning procedures.
- Address Building Regulations Part P (Electrical safety) implications for mechanical systems integration and ensure proper coordination with electrical installations.
- Conduct load calculations, energy modelling, and system analysis to optimise performance, energy efficiency, and cost\-effectiveness while meeting regulatory minimum standards.
- Prepare, review, and update technical specifications, project schedules, and cost estimates that demonstrate compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Oversee drafting and modelling work in AutoCAD, Revit, and other tools to ensure regulatory compliance and design precision.
- Conduct site assessments and inspections to verify project feasibility, regulatory compliance, and construction quality against approved designs.
- Prepare and review Building Control submissions, technical reports, and compliance documentation for mechanical systems.
- Collaborate with architects, contractors, Building Control Officers, and other engineering disciplines, ensuring all project aspects align with client expectations and regulatory requirements.
- Remain up\-to\-date with UK building standards (Building Regulations, CIBSE guidelines, BS standards, BREEAM requirements) and integrate sustainable practices into design solutions.
- Ensure mechanical installations comply with relevant British Standards including BS 6700 (water installations), BS 5449 (heating systems), and BS 5925 (ventilation systems).
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
- min. 5 years of experience in the building services sector within the UK, with demonstrated knowledge of Building Regulations compliance.
- Thorough understanding of UK Building Regulations Parts F, G, L, and P as they relate to mechanical building services.
- Proficiency in some UK design software (e.g., Hevacomp, IES VE, Revit, Auto CAD) and familiarity with project management tools.
- Comprehensive knowledge of UK codes, regulations, and sustainable design frameworks (Building Regulations, CIBSE guides, relevant British Standards, BREEAM methodology).
- Experience with Building Control application processes and liaising with regulatory authorities.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary teams and presenting technical compliance information to clients and authorities.
- Professional registration or working towards Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with IMechE or CIBSE is desirable.
