Loading Assistant
The Role:
We are seeking a reliable and safety\-focused Loading Assistant to support depot loading operations during early morning shifts. This role is essential to ensuring vehicles are loaded efficiently, safely, and in line with company procedures. The successful candidate will work within a fast\-paced warehouse and depot environment, maintaining high standards of safety, communication, and housekeeping.
This role is based in Leeds and reports to the Leeds Regional Distribution Manager.
Shift Pattern: Monday \- Friday 04:00am to 07:00am (15 hours per week)
What you will do:
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Load mixed fleet vehicles in accordance with company procedures and within scheduled departure times to support operational efficiency and delivery performance.
- Handle different product types appropriately, including fragile, heavy, and temperature\-sensitive goods, applying the correct care during loading.
- Demonstrate basic awareness of axle weight limits and load distribution principles to ensure loads are balanced and safely secured.
- Support accurate scanning, checking, and reconciliation of stock during the loading process.
- Identify damaged or compromised goods prior to loading and follow correct procedures to isolate, report, and prevent unsuitable goods from being dispatched.
- Safely handle and move stock and trays, taking appropriate measures depending on weight of product/tray.
- Complete basic load records using paper\-based or handheld systems where required.
- Safely operate pump trucks and accommodation ladders in accordance with company procedures and health \& safety guidelines, carrying out pre\-use checks and ensuring equipment is used correctly and stored safely after use.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping within warehouse and loading areas, ensuring all work areas are kept safe, clean, organised, and free from hazards at all times.
- Communicate clearly with drivers and depot management to ensure loading is completed accurately and safely.
- You recognise that high service standards support customer retention.
- You have a basic understanding of products and awareness of new products available.
- You understand how axle weight limits and load distribution principles.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to maintaining a positive safety culture within the depot.
- You will take responsibility for maintaining your own safety in the workplace and ensuring that your activities are carried out in full compliance with UK health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act.
- Understand and adhere to basic workplace hazards and safe systems of work.
- Know fire evacuation routes, alarms, and emergency procedures.
- Follow all safe loading, manual handling, and depot health \& safety procedures at all times.
- Report accidents, incidents, or unsafe conditions to the appropriate personnel.
- Promote safe working practices and challenge unsafe behaviour.
Education \& Knowledge:
- Previous experience within a warehouse, depot, or loading environment is desirable.
- Experience using basic paperwork or handheld scanning systems desirable.
- Knowledge of LGV/HGV loading risks and a basic understanding of safe loading practices.
- Counterbalance FLT licence desirable but not essential.
- Safety focused with good attention to detail.
- Reliable, practical and able to follow procedures consistently.
- Capable of manual handling within a fast\-paced depot environment.
- Able to work independently while maintaining safe working standards.
