Live-in General Manager
The Oakwood is a vibrant, established pub in the heart of Glossop — a thriving Peak District town just 30 minutes by train from Manchester. We’re known for our street food menu, cocktails, great beer, live music, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
We’re looking for a dedicated Live\-in General Manager to lead our team of 23 and help shape the next chapter of The Oakwood. This is a hands\-on, people\-focused role for someone who loves hospitality, takes pride in high standards, and knows how to create memorable guest experiences.
We also have a sister pub, The Bulls Head in Marple, so regular travel will be required to support the team there when needed.
The Role
As General Manager, you’ll oversee the day\-to\-day running of the pub, leading the team, maintaining standards, and ensuring every guest has a great experience. You’ll work closely with the kitchen and bar teams, manage budgets and costs, support recruitment and training, and help drive the business forward through strong leadership and fresh ideas.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Overseeing daily pub operations and ensuring smooth, efficient service
- Leading, motivating, and developing a team of 23
- Delivering consistently excellent guest experiences
- Managing recruitment, training, performance, and staff development
- Working closely with the kitchen and bar teams to maintain high food and drink standards
- Supporting marketing activity to attract new customers and retain regulars
- Ensuring compliance with health, safety, licensing, and operational standards
- Managing budgets, reporting, stock control, and cost management
- Creating a welcoming, vibrant atmosphere that reflects The Oakwood’s personality
We’re looking for someone with:
- Proven supervisory or management experience in a similar hospitality environment
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to build accountability across the team
- Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to adapt your approach when needed
- Good knowledge of HR practices, including recruitment, training, and team development
- A genuine passion for guest service and creating memorable experiences
- Experience managing budgets, costs, and financial performance
- A proactive, solutions\-focused approach to daily operational challenges
- The energy and enthusiasm to lead from the front in a lively pub environment
