Your Role

We’re looking for a talented Internal Communications \& Engagement Officer to help bring that ambition to life for our colleagues. In this newly created role, you’ll join a growing team already making a real impact creating communications that connect colleagues to our strategy and values, and drive action. You’ll strengthen our people\-focused culture by developing and delivering engaging content, campaigns and events that bring people together, including our regular Colleague Briefing sessions.

Working closely with the Communications Lead (Internal and Workforce) and colleagues across HR and Organisational Development, you’ll help design, develop and deliver strategic internal communications and engagement plans that drive behaviour change, boost leader visibility, support organisational performance, and encourage a meaningful two\-way dialogue at all levels.

You’ll take a proactive approach to internal communications \- identifying and shaping content from across the organisation and sharing it creatively across a range of channels to bring our plans to life, including digital, video, face\-to\-face engagement, newsletters, intranet content and LinkedIn.

You’ll also play a key role in planning and delivering internal events, making sure they are well organised, engaging and run smoothly. Alongside this, you’ll deliver targeted campaigns on key priorities such as health and wellbeing, EDI, and reward and recognition, while working closely with the wider Communications team to amplify great stories about Stockport building pride and advocacy right across our workforce.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is creative, proactive and self\-driven \- someone who takes ownership and thrives on turning ideas into impact. You’ll help shape the stories we tell, keeping colleagues informed while bringing our values and culture to life in a way that truly connects. Strong communications, writing and stakeholder management skills are a must. If you can add video editing and basic design skills, even better.

You’ll report to the Communications Lead (Internal and Workforce) and be part of a team at the heart of the organisation \- trusted to work with autonomy while influencing and supporting leaders at every level. You’ll create communications and design engagement initiatives that are strategic, empowering and full of heart, playing a key role in strengthening our Team Stockport culture and making the council an even better place to work.

This post is politically restricted under the terms of the 1989 Local Government and Housing Act. This dictates that you must seek the council’s permission before taking up any additional appointments or positions.

Stockport Council holds a Visa sponsorship licence but this can only be used for certain roles and this campaign does not currently qualify.

There is a contractural requirement for this role to form part of the On Call Communications Rota which operates Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays from 8am to 8pm. A standby allowance is paid for each shift (as at 1 April 2025\). The postholder will be on the rota approx 6 weekends a year
