We are looking for an experienced and driven Internal Bulk Transport Operations Manager to join our team at EMR, reporting to the Network Operations Manager.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead our regional internal transport planning operations, ensuring effective scheduling, resource allocation and outstanding service delivery across our own fleet. You will play a key role in managing our transport planning team, driving operational excellence and establishing a culture of continuous improvement.
You will be responsible for ensuring that our transport operations are safe, compliant, cost\-effective and customer\-focused, while supporting the development of our people and the wider EMR organisation.

What you will be doing

As our Internal Bulk Transport Operations Manager you will oversee the day\-to\-day management of the internal transport planning team and ensure the effective delivery of regional transport operations.
Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Transport Planning \& Operations: Lead, organise and standardise planning processes to ensure efficient scheduling, vehicle utilisation and service delivery in line with EMR policies and legal requirements.

  • Performance \& Continuous Improvement: Monitor daily and weekly service levels, track KPIs, produce monthly performance reports and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency.

  • Routing \& Customer Service: Oversee dispatching, routing and vehicle tracking, promoting excellent customer service alongside cost\- and fuel\-efficient transport solutions.

  • Rate Governance: Establish and manage transport rates with the support of the Network Operations Manager, ensuring accuracy and consistency across internal systems.

  • People Leadership: Support recruitment, resource planning, driver inductions, ongoing training and employee engagement, fostering a positive culture of safety, communication and continuous improvement.

  • Health, Safety \& Compliance: Ensure operational compliance with ADR, waste regulations and other applicable legislation. Conduct safety audits and oversee incident investigations in partnership with HR and SHE coordinators.

  • Fleet \& Cost Management: Work closely with the Fleet team and fleet engineers to ensure vehicles, trailers and equipment are maintained in line with good practice and Operator Licence requirements.

  • Financial Oversight: Monitor fuel, transport expenditure and haulage recovery, supporting cost\-effective purchasing, servicing, repairs and budget planning.

  • Communication \& Collaboration: Hold regular driver and staff briefings, encourage feedback and share best practice across the wider EMR organisation.

About you

We are looking for a proactive, methodical and solutions\-focused leader who is passionate about transport planning, operational excellence and developing people.
You will ideally have:

  • Previous experience in transport management, preferably within a busy operational environment.

  • A valid Standard National or International CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence).

  • A proven track record of cost\-effective purchasing and monitoring expenditure.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage confidently at all levels.

  • A commitment to Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures.

  • NEBOSH certification or other relevant safety training (desirable).

  • A valid LGV Class C or C\+E licence (desirable).

You will be a strong team player with the ability to lead from the front, inspire positive driver engagement and build effective working relationships across the business. You will have an appetite for planning and continuous improvement, a practical approach to problem\-solving and the ability to anticipate operational trends.
Strong geographical knowledge of the operating area is essential, alongside a willingness to travel widely and work extended hours when required.

If you are ready to take the next step in your transport management career and make a meaningful impact at EMR, we would love to hear from you.
Who we are:

The products we’ll all need tomorrow depend on us making the most of today’s end\-of\-life metals, plastics and other materials.
Take a car at the end of its life \- most people just see a…car at the end of its life.
We see steel, aluminium, copper, plastics, rubber, glass, parts, fluids, costs, risks, markets and – most importantly \- possibilities.
Now, multiply that by thousands of cars – we recover, reuse and recycle all those valuable materials and put them back to work as low\-carbon materials for manufacturing, infrastructure, energy and transport.
And that’s just one thing we recycle. Add buildings, factories, ships, railways and industrial equipment. That’s all our hard work – the gritty, practical, commercial, difficult work our 4,000 global colleagues do every day.

Anything from a can to an aircraft carrier can become anything from a bicycle to a building and, at the same time, we help to avoid 19 million tonnes of carbon and 10 million tonnes of waste to landfill, protecting nature, resources and the next generation’s future.

Which is all well and good for us to say, but this is what the real people behind the really hard work think:

“The people who work here are from varied backgrounds and have a variety of beliefs, all of which are accepted and respected.”

“I’m encouraged to keep a healthy work\-life balance so that I can be performing at my best.”

“I’ve been supported every step of the way in my career progression.”

‘‘EMR offers a fantastic and inclusive environment; collaboration across the whole business, humility and hard work.”

Four years as a certified Great Place To Work is no small feat. Oh, and don’t forget one of the UK’s Best Workplaces in Manufacturing, Production and Transportation. That’s pretty good too.

But we can do better. We’re aiming for a place in the top 60 companies in the UK – not for the accolade but for the improvement. A journey you should probably join us for.

If you want to be part of something bigger than yourself, have a role that really makes a difference and work with likeminded people towards the same purpose, this is the role for you.
