The Team
This role sits within a team responsible for digital improvement, automation and service transformation . The team supports NHS England services to improve efficiency, quality and consistency through technology‑enabled change, working collaboratively with operational, clinical, HR, finance and digital colleagues.
The service designs and delivers automation solutions aligned to organisational priorities and governance, including rule‑based automation, workflow optimisation and AI‑enabled solutions. The team promotes responsible, transparent and ethical use of automation and AI technologies within agreed information governance and assurance frameworks.
The band for this role is subject to full evaluation and is indicative at the time of advert
This role requires strong technical capability alongside the ability to explain automation and AI solutions clearly to non‑technical stakeholders, ensuring solutions are reliable, compliant and deliver real service improvement.
Responsibilities
Design, develop and deploy automation solutions using appropriate tools and programming languages
Build and maintain AI‑enabled automations in line with organisational approval and assurance processes
Write, review, test and maintain code, scripts or workflows to support automation and integration
Analyse business processes to identify opportunities suitable for automation or AI‑driven improvement
Support the implementation and embedding of automation solutions into live services
Monitor, troubleshoot and maintain existing automations to ensure reliability, performance and compliance
Produce and maintain clear documentation covering design, logic, limitations and operating procedures
Work with APIs, data sources and systems to enable automated processes
Explain technical concepts, automation logic and AI outputs in clear, accessible language
Ensure all solutions comply with data protection, information governance and AI guidance
Identify risks and escalate issues where solutions fall outside agreed parameters
Contribute to the development of automation standards, guidance and best practice
Support colleagues through guidance, documentation and knowledge sharing
NHS England has a wide range of statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers. These are focused on supporting the wider NHS to deliver high quality care, as well as doing those things that are best done once for the whole NHS.
Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms — enabling us to design and deliver high\-quality NHS services.
In March 2025, the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the department.
If you currently work within the NHS and if successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
The postholder will be educated to degree level or possess equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, such as computer science, data, digital or engineering, and will be able to demonstrate ongoing professional development in areas related to automation, digital technologies or artificial intelligence. They will have practical experience of designing, building and supporting automation solutions, alongside experience of writing, maintaining and supporting code or scripts, for example using Python, PowerShell, RPA tools or similar technologies.
The role requires experience of working with data, systems and APIs to enable effective automation, as well as a sound understanding of AI concepts and their practical application within automation and digital solutions. The postholder will demonstrate strong analytical skills, with the ability to assess existing processes, identify opportunities for automation and apply appropriate technical solutions within defined objectives and governance arrangements.
The individual will be able to explain technical concepts and solutions clearly to non ‑ technical stakeholders, supported by clear written and verbal communication skills. They will be capable of working independently and with initiative, while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. A strong commitment to continuous improvement and ongoing learning is essential, ensuring solutions remain effective, secure and aligned with organisational needs.
Desirable experience includes working within a healthcare or public sector environment, as well as experience of supporting AI ‑ enabled tools or machine learning solutions within an operational or service delivery context.

This role will be recruited via an in person assessment centre day which will take place between 0900 and 1700 on the 5 th June 2026 in Wellington Place, Leeds, LS1 4AP. There are no alternative dates or locations for this assessment centre.

Secondments
Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only, agreement should be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.
Successful candidates will be required to meet organisational policy of hybrid working \& a minimum 40% time in the office.
