The Health Care Assistant's role within the Breast Centre is to assist with patient care within the department as assigned by the Breast Centre Programme Manager or Breast clinical nurse specialist.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
- Assist coordinating the patient's care through the breast clinic and breast radiology ensuring smooth, efficient transition from each area from registration, through consultation, radiology to discharge or follow up as required. The role involves assisting Breast Radiologists in the ultrasound room, and assisting the Consultant Breast surgeons in their clinics. The role requires flexibility on a daily basis. It involves escorting patients into the room, and preparing them for the examination, setting out sterile trolleys and aiding the radiographer/ radiologist in biopsy and localisation techniques.
- Working with all members of the breast multidisciplinary team to ensure patient care is delivered in safe, efficient manner.
- Assists with patient specific safety precautions, collects, reports and documents data related to patient.
- Conducts Monthly hand hygiene audits and reports same to IPC.
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times.
- Provides and maintains a clean, safe environment, performs and/or assists others to perform proper aseptic technique, isolation procedures and infection control measures.
- Maintains patient care areas with appropriate supplies.
- Performs related duties as required.
- The timely identification and communication of any issues and complaints to the Breast programme Manager or Breast clinical nurse specialist.
- Demonstrate IR competencies post training within the probation period.
- The post holder will ensure the patient's needs are individually assessed showing compassion
- The patient's families and significant others are involved as appropriate.
- Patients are cared for in the optimum clinical environment, adhering to all hospital wide policies and guidelines.
- Provide support for Breast radiology including preparing clinic lists, escorting patients to mammogram and ultrasound, assisting them prepare for their imaging and post imaging.
- Assist the breast radiologist with diagnostic imaging and biopsies including delivering samples to the laboratory
- Stocking of wound care trolley.
- Order prosthesis and post\-surgery bras / information leaflets.
- Collect or deliver charts to different department.
- Assist admin staff if required \- scan trackers.
- Assist nurse in nurse led clinics.
The post holder is expected to:
- Attend in a timely manner all mandatory education sessions.
- Ensure their professional and personal persona positively reflects Beacon Hospital.
- Attend appropriate study days and courses.
- Participate in their performance review with the Breast Programme Manager.
- Utilise effective time management skills.
- Maintain professional appearance and dress code.
- Comply with guidelines for absence or tardiness.
- Attend staff meetings, read all work\-related email and other postings.
- All employees are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the hospital, which may include floating to other departments to assist as the patient needs fluctuate.
- Wear Identification Badge when working.
Qualifications
- Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
- Completion of an approved QQI level 5 course for Health Care Assistants (all 8 modules) or an equivalent Nursing qualification required.
- Previous Health Care experience preferred.
