Fire Safety NVQ Trainer & Assessor
Evolution Safety Solutions Ltd is looking for an experienced Fire Safety NVQ Trainer \& Assessor to join our Training and Qualifications team in Merthyr Tydfil.
This is a specialist role focused on the delivery and assessment of fire\-safety qualifications. We are looking for someone who understands vocational assessment and has genuine occupational experience within fire safety, passive fire protection or a closely related fire discipline.
The successful candidate will manage NVQ learners through their qualifications and deliver face\-to\-face fire\-safety training. This is not an entry\-level training position. You must be capable of assessing occupational competence and communicating technical fire\-safety subjects confidently to experienced candidates.
Key Responsibilities
The role will include:
- Managing a caseload of candidates undertaking fire\-safety vocational qualifications.
- Assessing candidate competence against qualification standards and assessment criteria.
- Reviewing portfolios and evidence submitted through our electronic assessment system.
- Conducting professional discussions, knowledge questioning and candidate reviews.
- Undertaking workplace observations where required.
- Assessing photographic, video, documentary and workplace evidence.
- Providing clear assessment decisions and constructive candidate feedback.
- Developing assessment plans and monitoring candidates through to completion.
- Maintaining accurate assessment records and ensuring audit\-ready learner portfolios.
- Working in accordance with awarding organisation requirements and Evolution Safety Solutions' assessment and quality\-assurance procedures.
- Participating in assessor standardisation and IQA activities.
- Working with our IQA team to address sampling feedback and maintain consistent assessment standards.
- Delivering structured face\-to\-face fire\-safety training at our Merthyr Tydfil Training Academy and, where required, at client locations.
- Developing and maintaining course materials, presentations, assessment resources and technical content.
- Keeping technical knowledge current through CPD, legislation, standards and industry guidance.
The role will initially have a particular focus on our qualifications and training associated with:
- Fire Door Inspection.
- Fire Stopping Inspection.
- Passive fire protection.
- Fire Risk Assessment and wider fire\-safety qualifications as competence permits.
We will not expect an assessor to assess or train candidates in a technical discipline in which they cannot demonstrate appropriate occupational competence.
Essential Requirements
Applicants should be able to demonstrate:
- A recognised assessor qualification, such as A1, D32/D33, CAVA or equivalent.
- Current or substantial previous experience undertaking vocational/NVQ assessment.
- Practical experience of assessing workplace competence rather than purely classroom\-based teaching.
- Relevant occupational experience within fire safety, passive fire protection, fire risk assessment, construction fire safety or a closely related discipline.
- A sound understanding of evidence requirements, assessment criteria, authenticity, validity, sufficiency and currency.
- Experience conducting professional discussions and making defensible assessment decisions.
- Strong written communication and report\-writing ability.
- Confidence working with experienced tradespeople, supervisors and fire\-safety professionals.
- Good IT skills and the ability to work with electronic learner portfolios.
- The ability to work independently and manage a learner caseload effectively.
- Willingness to travel to candidate and client locations where workplace assessment is required.
It would be advantageous to hold or have experience in:
- Level 4 IQA or equivalent.
- Fire Door Inspection qualifications.
- Fire Stopping Inspection qualifications.
- Passive fire protection.
- Fire Risk Assessment qualifications and practical FRA experience.
- Fire Safety qualifications at Level 3 or above.
- Construction\-related NVQ assessment.
- Health \& Safety qualifications.
- Classroom or technical training delivery.
- Quals Direct or similar e\-portfolio systems.
- Awarding organisation EQA processes and centre standardisation.
Training Delivery
This position is not solely an NVQ portfolio\-assessment role.
The successful candidate will also deliver and develop face\-to\-face technical training. They must therefore be comfortable standing in front of a group of industry professionals and delivering structured technical content.
Where additional technical development is required before delivering a particular course independently, this will be provided through training, mentoring, observation and supervised/co\-delivery before sign\-off.
Professional Development
Evolution Safety Solutions will support the successful candidate's continuing professional development.
Depending upon existing qualifications and experience, this may include:
- Fire Door Inspection qualifications.
- Fire Stopping Inspection qualifications.
- Fire Risk Assessment development.
- Passive fire technical development.
- IQA development.
- Additional assessor qualifications.
- Relevant CPD and industry training.
- Support towards appropriate professional membership, including the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM).
Working Arrangements
The role is primarily based at our Training Academy in Merthyr Tydfil because face\-to\-face training forms an important part of the position.
Some NVQ assessment, portfolio review and administrative work may be undertaken remotely where appropriate and agreed.
UK\-wide travel will be required periodically for workplace observations, candidate assessments, client training and other business requirements.
What We Are Looking For
We are specifically looking for someone with established vocational assessment skills who also understands the fire sector.
We are not looking for a novice assessor or somebody whose only experience is delivering generic classroom training. Equally, operational fire\-service experience alone will not automatically demonstrate competence to assess specialist passive\-fire qualifications.
The successful candidate must be able to make robust assessment decisions, challenge candidates appropriately, maintain awarding\-organisation standards and represent Evolution Safety Solutions professionally when delivering technical fire\-safety training.
Salary and Benefits
- £35,000 starting salary.
- Company pension.
- Private medical healthcare following probation.
- 28 days' annual leave including bank holidays.
- Additional Christmas shutdown period.
- Funded relevant professional development and qualifications.
- Business travel expenses in accordance with company policy.
Appointment will be subject to:
- Verification of qualifications and certificates.
- Satisfactory references.
- DBS check.
- Evidence of relevant occupational competence.
- Right\-to\-work checks.
- Awarding organisation approval where applicable.
