Financial Controller

The Opportunity

We're looking for a confident, commercially astute Financial Controller to take ownership of our finance function and help steer the business toward continued success. This is a pivotal role for a high\-calibre finance professional who combines rigorous financial control with genuine strategic insight. This is someone who builds trust through accuracy, delivers results through strong financial leadership, and thrives as part of a winning team.

You'll be the go\-to person for financial reporting, planning and compliance, working closely with the Directors and presenting directly to the Board. If you enjoy rolling up your sleeves, improving processes, shaping strategic decisions, and using numbers to tell a clear story, this role offers real influence and visibility within the organisation. You'll be supported by an accounts assistant, so you won't be doing this alone.

What You'll Be Doing

● Own and produce the monthly management accounts pack, including P\&L, balance sheet, cash flow and insightful supporting analysis.

● Present monthly financial results to the Board with clarity, confidence and strategic context.

● Oversee the month\-end close, including journals, accruals and prepayments.

● Maintain robust financial reconciliations and high\-quality management information.

● Lead the preparation of statutory accounts, supported by clear backup schedules.

● Prepare, update and present financial plans, budgets and forecasts, contributing to broader business strategy.

● Maintain and enhance the core Excel\-based planning and forecasting model.

● Oversee cash flow management and forecasting, working closely with the Directors.

● Ensure VAT returns and other tax filings are accurate, compliant and on time.

● Ensure all ledgers are accurate, complete and up to date.

● Oversee payroll and pension administration.

● Lead and develop an accounts assistant, building team capability and sharing knowledge.

● Participate as an active member of the Senior Leadership Team, helping to deliver the overall business plan on behalf of the shareholders.

What You'll Bring

*Essential:*

● ACCA, CIMA or ACA qualification.

● Proven experience in a similar senior finance role within a project\-based business, ideally construction or a similar sector, and comfortable operating hands\-on in an SME environment rather than relying on large finance teams or established structures.

● Contract accounting experience, including WIP, retentions and revenue recognition on long\-term contracts.

● Job/project costing and margin analysis across multiple concurrent projects.

● High proficiency with accounting software (e.g. Sage) and expert Excel / financial modelling skills.

● Confidence operating and communicating at Board level, with the gravitas to influence decision\-making.

● Solid understanding of UK statutory finance and tax regulations.

*Desirable:*

● Experience within UK accounting practice (audit or similar) earlier in your career, ideally two to three years, rather than a background limited to large organisations.

● Strong commercial acumen and the ability to translate financial data into strategic insight for senior stakeholders.

● Experience business partnering with non\-finance stakeholders (Operations, Commercial, Project teams).

● A track record of improving processes and controls, with the appetite to take on greater scope as the business grows.

● A resilient, self\-starting approach, someone who takes ownership of outcomes rather than just tasks.

● Strong communication skills and a team\-first mindset.
