Hours: 18 hours per week – To be completed flexibly between 8am – 5pm, Monday to Friday
Salary: £26,400–£28,800 per annum, depending on experience (£55,000–£60,000 FTE)
Contract: Permanent, part\-time

The Role

The Carpenter’s Arms is looking for an experienced, commercially aware and hands\-on Finance Manager to lead and strengthen our finance function.

This is an unusual finance role in that we are looking for someone who can operate comfortably at both ends of the spectrum.

You will work with the CEO, Treasurer and Senior Management Team to provide financial analysis, forecasting and strategic advice, helping us make better decisions around growth, borrowing, investment, recruitment and expenditure.

At the same time, you must be comfortable getting into the detail. You will work closely with our existing Bookkeeper and need to be capable of investigating reconciliations, understanding the ledger and undertaking practical finance work yourself when required.

We are not looking for someone who simply reports what happened last month. We want someone who is curious about the story behind the numbers and who will proactively identify opportunities to strengthen the organisation’s financial position.

That might mean spotting the effect of a payment cycle on cash\-flow, identifying whether refinancing could release resources, modelling the right time to recruit or invest, or challenging an assumption before a significant financial commitment is made.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

The role will include management accounts and financial reporting; cash\-flow forecasting and scenario modelling; organisational and property\-level budgeting; Housing Benefit and Registered Provider reconciliations; oversight of arrears and income; audit and year\-end coordination; and financial modelling to support major organisational decisions.

You will work closely with our existing Bookkeeper, who will continue to lead much of the routine day\-to\-day bookkeeping activity. The Finance Manager will contribute to the management, analysis, oversight and strategic layer while maintaining sufficient practical competence to step into the underlying finance processes when required.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

Practical finance

Strong bookkeeping competence, including bank reconciliations, journals, ledgers, accruals/prepayments and month\-end processes.

Qualifications/experience

An appropriate accounting or bookkeeping qualification, or equivalent demonstrable experience.

Management information

Experience producing monthly management accounts and explaining financial performance clearly.

Cash\-flow

Strong cash\-flow forecasting and scenario\-modelling capability.

Budgeting

Experience creating, monitoring and reforecasting organisational budgets.

Reconciliation

Ability to investigate and reconcile complex income streams and identify underlying issues.

Financial modelling

Strong Excel skills and the ability to build and use financial models.

Controls

Good understanding of financial controls, authorisation and segregation of duties.

Communication

Ability to explain financial information clearly to non\-finance managers and decision\-makers.

Hands\-on approach

Willingness and ability to undertake transactional and bookkeeping work personally where required.

Strategic thinking

Ability to challenge constructively, identify opportunities and flag financial risks early.

Highly desirable

Part\-qualified ACCA/CIMA/ACA or equivalent would be advantageous, although demonstrable ability matters more to us than a particular professional badge.

We would also welcome experience in charity, housing or supported accommodation finance; Housing Benefit or Registered Provider arrangements; trustee or board reporting; multi\-property or cost\-centre accounting; financial dashboards and KPIs; audit preparation; developing financial systems during organisational growth; managing a small finance team; or working with local authorities, commissioners or external funding partners.

A fully qualified accountant would be welcomed where this is accompanied by strong practical bookkeeping capability and a willingness to remain hands\-on.

The Person

This role would suit an experienced Finance Manager or Management Accountant who enjoys combining detailed financial work with strategic thinking.

It may particularly appeal to someone looking for an intellectually interesting finance role on a genuinely part\-time basis.

We offer flexibility around the 18 weekly hours and are very open to school\-hours working or other arrangements that allow an experienced finance professional to balance the role with responsibilities outside work. It would be key to complete these hours on site during office hours to interact with the management team.

You will need to be someone who asks questions, looks beyond the headline numbers and is comfortable saying, “I think there is a better way of doing this.”
