Engineering Manager
About the role
We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead and grow the engineers behind our SaaS platform. It’s a role for someone who has moved, or wants to move, from strong technical work into people leadership, and who wants to keep a foot in both.
About Us
We are a passionate, innovative and fast\-growing company that provides award\-winning property software. SME Professional, our cloud\-based software solution, is used by letting and estate agents across the UK. We also develop websites for the property, finance and legal industries. In total, our nearly 50\-strong team are committed to delivering great products and service for our clients.
We feel strongly that alignment with our core competencies is as important as experience. As a business, we regularly seek to view things from a unique perspective and are constantly learning and adapting to offer the best products and services to our clients. Our people should share the same passion, be naturally curious, and strive to find innovative solutions. Our modern office beside Leith Links offers flexible working spaces, regular team events, and plenty of caffeinated perks.
The Role
You’ll lead a team of eight engineers, reporting to the Technical Director. Your focus is the people, the delivery, and how well the team works: coaching engineers, keeping delivery healthy and predictable, and raising the standard of how we build. You won’t be the primary architect, as our Tech Leads own deep technical direction, but you will be technically credible. You should be comfortable discussing architecture, reviewing approaches, challenging decisions constructively, and coaching engineers in good practice. Hands\-on contribution is welcome where it genuinely helps the team, though it isn’t the core of the job.
Our platform is an established product with a mature customer base, built on PHP (Silex/Symfony/Laravel) and MySQL. We’re shipping new functionality, modernising parts of the framework, and building AI into both the product and the way we work. This role suits someone who enjoys building on an established product that customers already depend on, balancing new development with the quality and performance that keeps them well served.
Working with AI
We use AI in our day\-to\-day engineering workflow, and AI\-driven features are in constant development in the product. You don’t need to be an AI specialist, but you should be genuinely interested in applying it well: helping the team use it to work faster and better, and supporting the engineers building AI features for our customers. It’s an exciting part of the role, complementing the broader engineering challenges and opportunities you’ll be involved in.
How we work
We work in cross\-functional squads of Product, Engineering, and QA that own delivery end\-to\-end. As Engineering Manager, you look after the people and the delivery health across those squads, working alongside Tech Leads, who provide the deeper technical and architectural direction.
What you’ll be doing
*Lead and develop engineers*
Line manage, coach, and grow the team through regular one\-to\-ones, honest feedback, and development and performance conversations, helping engineers build confidence, capability, and ownership. You’ll sustain a culture where people feel supported and clear on what’s expected of them.
*Keep delivery healthy*
Help squads deliver predictably and sustainably, supporting planning, capacity, prioritisation, and risk, and spotting blockers early. You’ll keep plans realistic and trade\-offs visible.
*Raise engineering standards*
Work with Tech Leads and senior engineers to strengthen everyday practice across code review, consistency, maintainability, and quality, coaching engineers to think well about how they build.
*Partner with Product and QA*
Work closely with Product Managers, QA, and leadership, communicating clearly with technical and non\-technical colleagues alike.
*Make the team better over time*
Identify what slows the team down and fix it: improving clarity, reducing friction, and building practical habits that lift delivery and quality, without piling on process.
What we’re looking for
- A strong software engineering background, ideally in PHP/Laravel, MySQL, and SaaS or web application development.
- Experience leading, mentoring, or managing engineers, whether as a manager, a tech lead, or a senior engineer who has grown others. First\-time managers from a strong technical background are welcome.
- The technical credibility to review approaches, challenge decisions constructively, and coach engineers on good practice.
- Sound judgement on delivery, quality, testing, maintainability, trade\-offs, and release risk.
- Clear communication with non\-technical stakeholders.
- A talent for improving how teams work without adding unnecessary process.
- Enthusiasm for applying AI practically across both product and engineering workflows.
Our standard full\-time hours are 8:30am \- 5:00pm Monday to Friday. We are also willing to accept applications from candidates who require more flexible working.
To help you stand out from the crowd, we want to know more about you and what kind of role you're looking for. Please send us a cover letter or note explaining why you think you're a great fit for this role.
