Duty Solicitor
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Duty Solicitor to join our criminal defence team. The successful candidate will provide high\-quality legal advice and representation to clients at police stations and Magistrates’ Courts, ensuring their rights are protected throughout the criminal justice process.
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated and professional Duty Solicitor who is confident working independently, managing their own caseload, and handling matters from initial instruction through to conclusion.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and representation to clients at police stations and Magistrates’ Courts.
- Undertake police station and court duty solicitor work in accordance with Legal Aid Agency and firm requirements.
- Independently manage a varied criminal defence caseload with minimal supervision, while support will be available where required.
- Represent clients at first appearances, bail applications, plea hearings, sentencing hearings, and other criminal proceedings.
- Prepare cases thoroughly by reviewing evidence, taking instructions, advising clients, and developing defence strategies.
- Conduct negotiations with the Crown Prosecution Service to secure the best possible outcomes for clients.
- Draft legal documents, applications, and correspondence accurately and efficiently.
- Liaise professionally with police officers, court staff, counsel, experts, and other legal professionals.
- Maintain accurate attendance notes, case records, and file management in compliance with SRA, Legal Aid Agency, and firm standards.
- Meet billing, time recording, and compliance requirements.
- Participate in out\-of\-hours police station rota work where required.
- Keep fully up to date with criminal law, procedure, and relevant legislation.
Requirements
- Qualified Solicitor with current practising certificate.
- Accredited Duty Solicitor status is essential.
- Proven experience in criminal defence and advocacy.
- Strong working knowledge of criminal law and Legal Aid procedures.
- Ability to independently manage a busy and demanding caseload.
- Excellent advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and within strict deadlines.
- Professional, organised, and client\-focused approach.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
