Digital Forensics Investigator

Position Overview

A Digital Forensic Investigator at CYFOR will be primarily responsible for the imaging, analysis and reporting on mobile phones and computers whilst conforming to the ISO accreditation standards and Regulatory requirements, such as Forensic Science Regulator Statutory Code of Practice to which CYFOR adhere to. .

Reporting Structure

The role reports ultimately to their line manager and has no direct reports. The role will involve the mentoring of Digital Forensic Examiners.

Place of Work

This role will typically be based at CYFOR, Benjarron House, Middleton, M24 1SW or 9 Merus Court, Meridian Business Park, Leicester, LE19 1RJ, but may also require occasional travel to other places of work in line with roles and responsibilities.

Key Roles \& Responsibilities

Performing a combination of, but not necessarily all or limited to, the following duties:

• Receive, inventory and sign for evidence submitted for examination, ensuring continuity of all exhibits, and maintaining integrity throughout;


• To ensure that all property and/or documentary evidence that comes into their possession during the course of an investigation is correctly recorded and stored in accordance with CYFOR procedures;


• Conduct forensic digital examination of computers, mobile devices, and other electronic devices using the appropriate standard operating procedures, methodologies, tools and techniques, in accordance with ISO17025 and the Forensic Science Regulators Code of Practice. This will take place on\-site or in the lab;


• Attend onsite to conduct acquisitions of electronic devices or assist in the seizure and ‘live’ examination of computer/mobile phone and other digital equipment. Identify and secure digital evidence sources to assist with investigations


• To record the details of acquisitions and investigations undertaken and maintain the confidentiality of this information;


• Pass on any relevant information and intelligence to appropriate person(s), complying with appropriate legislation.


• Provide high quality detailed written and oral evidence regarding complex technical matters to support the Criminal Justice System. Attend court as a witness in support of such evidence.


• When completing QA checks or reviews, ensure that information which directly and/ or substantially affects the overall conclusions are thoroughly checked in line with the documented procedures.


• Provide specialist technical support to the Examiner roles in the company as an expert and coach their technical development within the team in support of the Criminal Team Lead/ Forensic Team Lead;


• To ensure that appropriate security and access control of systems and evidence is maintained at all times.


• Identify and mitigate Health and Safety risks associated with electronic devices.


• Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of working areas within the laboratory.


• To ensure the work meets quality standards in providing a service to all clients; to report or escalate issues, as appropriate, to Line Management.


• Configure and maintain computer hardware for use in case work; resolve technical issues involving equipment connectivity and communication;


• Provide information and/or technical assistance to users concerning the development and maintenance of the computer network;


• To develop experience and detailed technical knowledge of current technology and the wide variety of tools and techniques used to assist in the acquisition of evidence;


• To support the development of Examiners and other Investigators by conducting training sessions and team meetings to cascade knowledge.


• To engage with and support CYFOR’s Quality Team in the accreditation and certification of the company to regulatory standards, including activities not limited to auditing \& SOP writing.


• Assist with validation and verification tests of forensic software, hardware, and methods;


• Deal with telephone enquiries in relation to all technical and administrative issues.


• Maintain current knowledge within field of expertise, keeping up to date with changes through personal development, training and other available resources


• To create comprehensive quotations of Digital Forensic work for prospective clients upon request;


• To always dress and act in a professional manner;


• To lead by example, demonstrating professionalism to colleagues commensurate with post;


• To comply with safe working practices;


• To participate and reasonably engage in the Annual Staff review process;


• Any other tasks that may be required from time to time.

Experience, Knowledge and Requirements

The candidate employed as a Digital Forensics Investigator should have the following qualifications or equivalent thereof:

• Educated to undergraduate degree level;


• To be able to demonstrate significant use of computer analysis software (such as XWays, Axiom, and EnCase, etc.);


• To be able to demonstrate significant use of mobile phone analysis software (such as Cellebrite, XRY, and Axiom, etc.);


• A minimum of 2 years digital forensics experience or equivalent;


• Possess an expert knowledge of mobile device, computers, and other storage devices as well as their operating/file systems;


• Possess an understanding of the criminal justice system and legal evidential issues in relation to crime investigation, in particular laws of evidence admissibility and disclosure;


• Ability to communicate at all levels, adapting the style of communication to meet the needs of the audience;


• Ability to remain calm and controlled and maintain good performance within a high pressure environment;


• Ability to effectively plan and coordinate projects;


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;


• Demonstrate a high level of accuracy and attention to detail;


• Ability to absorb, understand and apply new Forensic Science Regulatory requirements;


• Demonstrate a flexible approach to work and a high level of self\-motivation;


• Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality;


• Possess excellent IT skills and demonstrate competency in a number of systems and applications.


• Due to the nature of the work the post holder must be prepared to handle materials that may be offensive and distressing.

Pay: £35,000\.00\-£40,000\.00 per year
