The role
The Design \& Technical Manager leads McCann’s Design \& Professional Services function within the Local Authority Business. The role provides strategic leadership, technical governance and operational management of the lighting design team, ensuring the successful delivery of compliant, innovative and commercially effective street lighting and highway electrical design solutions.

The postholder is accountable for technical excellence, quality assurance, resource planning, client satisfaction and the continual development of the department whilst supporting the successful delivery of design commissions, installation projects and long\-term maintenance frameworks.

Role and responsibilities;

*What your role will include:*

  • Lead, motivate, mentor and develop the Design Team through coaching, performance management and succession planning.

  • Manage departmental resources, workload allocation, utilisation and recruitment.

  • Prepare departmental forecasts, KPI reporting and performance updates for senior management.

  • Manage external design consultants and specialist technical support where required.

  • Champion a culture of safety, quality, innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Provide technical leadership and approval of lighting and electrical designs.

  • Undertake and review Lighting Reality designs, Trimble Pro (Amtech) calculations and AutoCAD drawings.

  • Produce estimates, reports, specifications and contract documentation.

  • Carry out site surveys, asset assessments and lighting impact studies.

  • Support estimating and bid teams with technical input for tenders and frameworks.

  • Develop trusted relationships with clients, consultants and stakeholders.

  • Represent McCann at client meetings, technical forums and industry events.

  • Support growth of the Professional Services business through innovation and business development.

  • Maintain technical standards, competency frameworks and CPD programmes.

  • Monitor regulatory and industry changes and implement improvements.

  • Drive digital engineering and process improvements.
Essential criteria

*Who we are looking for:*

  • Degree, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

  • Extensive experience in highway electrical engineering, street lighting design or related infrastructure.

  • Previous leadership experience managing technical design teams.

  • High proficiency in Lighting Reality, AutoCAD LT and Trimble Pro (Amtech).

  • Excellent knowledge of BS7671, BS5489, CDM Regulations and underground cable design.

  • Strong commercial awareness and project delivery experience.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Full UK Driving License with willingness to travel.
