Excool is a world leader in advanced data centre cooling systems. We design, manufacture and commission the most efficient, lowest energy equipment currently available to cool data centres. We are looking for a Controls Engineer to join our technical team and support the design and development of PLC control solutions for our HVAC equipment.

Working closely with our sales, design and project management teams, you will be responsible for producing PLC controls logic, controller configurations, HMI software and supporting documentation in line with company standards. The role will also involve providing technical support and troubleshooting during commissioning in the factory and on\-site commissioning as well as assisting with client queries.

What you’ll be doing

  • Produce sophisticated PLC controls strategy and HMI software for a range of PLC platforms including; Carel c.suite/STone, Trend IQSET, Danfoss Alsmart etc utilising function block, structured text and graphical interface development.

  • Produce supporting documentation (description of operations, BMS points registers, technical guides and training documentation).

  • Configure PLCs for site specific requirements such as mapping electrical I/O, configuring system logs \& site/ unit specific variables as well as configuring industry standard protocol lines such as Modbus, BACnet, SNMP \& more.

  • Support various stakeholders across the organisation such as sales, project managers, mechanical and electrical design, production, R\&D \& commissioning with technical insight.

  • Ensure accurate version management is adhered to, including creating detailed revision notes and following version management processes.

  • As part of the technical support team: monitor, troubleshoot and resolve incoming and ongoing client issues and queries, liaising with external stakeholders and communicating via email, telephone and in person where required.

  • Assist with factory commissioning and carry out practical engineering tasks where required.

  • Travel to sites in the UK and abroad to assist with commissioning activities, including staying away when required.

  • Support continuous improvement of control strategies, HMI software, device configurations and technical documentation.

  • Develop deep knowledge of various HVAC Applications, controls, electrical components and associated systems.

  • Participate in ongoing technical training and development to further enhance your skills and knowledge.

  • Undertake other reasonable duties appropriate to the role and the needs of the business.
What we’re looking for
  • An interest in developing skills in PLC and HMI Programming, HVAC controls knowledge and commissioning.

  • A good technical understanding of engineering principles.

  • A driven, self\-motivated attitude, with the ability to work on your own initiative and influence decision making.

  • A team\-oriented mindset with the ability to communicate effectively and build strong relationships with a wide variety of people at all levels.
What you will need
  • Previous experience with PLCs, HMIs, BMS or HVAC controls is desirable. We also welcome applicants from electrical maintenance, commissioning or servicing backgrounds with relevant controls experience.

  • A relevant engineering or technical qualification, such as a degree, HNC/HND, or apprenticeship in electrical, electronic, mechanical, mechatronic or controls engineering—or relevant practical experience.

  • A working understanding of electrical systems and control principles, gained through education, training or employment.

  • A logical approach to problem\-solving and fault\-finding, with a willingness to develop your PLC programming and HMI development skills.
