Job summary

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in high\-risk obstetrics to join the team at Musgrove Park Hospital.

This substantive 10 PA post combines a broad general obstetric and gynaecological role with dedicated time to support and develop our high\-risk obstetric service. We are interested in applicants with an interest in multiple pregnancy who are keen to help shape services

The successful candidate will establish and lead a dedicated multiple pregnancy antenatal clinic, working closely with fetal medicine and sonography colleagues, With the ambition of developing the service in line with Twins Trust standards. The role also includes responsibility as Cross\-County Fetal Monitoring Lead, providing clinical leadership, education and governance across the service.

In addition, the postholder will contribute to elective and emergency obstetrics and gynaecology, outpatient clinics, theatre and day\-case activity, and participate in the 1:12 consultant on\-call rota.

Main duties, tasks \& skills required

Provide high quality obstetric and gynaecological care across inpatient, outpatient and emergency settings within Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil Hospital.

Participate in the 1:12 Obstetric \& Gynaecology on\-call rota, including twice daily consultant led ward rounds on Labour Ward at Musgrove Park Hospital.

Lead and support general gynaecology clinics, day surgery and elective caesarean lists.

Contribute to the departmental teaching, supervision and appraisal of junior doctors.

Engage in clinical governance, audit and service development.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated, patient\-centred care.

Participate in research and quality improvement initiatives.

Job description

Within High Risk Obstetrics

Establish and lead a dedicated antenatal clinic for multiple pregnancies, with the support of our sonography and fetal medicine teams who will provide scanning. The aim of this service should be to achieve accreditation with The Twins Trust.

Provide a weekly elective caesarean section list, as part of the dedicated elective caesarean section team.

To provide leadership and training as a cross county Fetal Monitoring Lead, working with the multidisciplinary team to provide this in dedicated sessions at both sites.

Educational Supervision

Consultants are required to supervise the education of doctors in training and doctors in post graduate roles. The post holder will be involved with teaching and training of doctors and should help with both their professional and personal development. Consultants must ensure that junior doctors in their care are not overwhelmed by clinical commitments or overburdened by responsibilities inappropriate to the experience required. Consultants are also responsible for the assessment and appraisal of trainees under their supervision and must keep the Clinical and / or College Tutor aware of problems that may arise. There is dedicated SPA to support the role of being an educational supervisor.

Teaching

There is an active teaching programme in the hospital. We have a dedicated faculty session every Wednesday afternoon. In addition, there are monthly cross site quality and audit learning forums held off site.

Junior staff are encouraged to obtain higher qualifications; their training is a vital part of the work of the department, the appointee (in common with other senior members of the trust), will be expected to supervise the doctors in training to participate in teaching and be involved with the postgraduate programme generally.

Research

Research is encouraged, particularly when this is appropriate to the professional development of the successful candidate and to the service development of the department. Opportunities are available within the Trust with applications for funding coordinated by the Trust's Medical Director.

Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to actively participate in audit, initiating and supervising audit projects related to sub\-specialty interest and will liaise with the Obstetric and Gynaecology governance lead consultants. All audit projects, including Trust directed audit are approved by the Clinical Effectiveness and Audit Committee. Participation in national audit is encouraged and the appointee will be expected to participate in the Twins Trust audit. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development and reporting of Clinical Quality Standards.

Clinical Governance

All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their actions to those for which they are deemed competent. Clinical staff are also required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisations regarding supervision.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and Royal Colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Each Consultant is job planned 1\.5 PA to support these activities.

Administration / Budgetary Responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.

Appraisal, Job Planning and Mandatory Annual Training

The successful candidate will be required to participate actively in the annual appraisal and job planning process. In addition, they will be expected to be up to date with Trust and departmental specific training.

Revalidation

The Trust has the required arrangements in place, as laid down by the Royal Colleges to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports all consultants going through the revalidation process.

Mentoring

The Trust is committed to setting up a mentor for all newly qualified Consultants. Full support and guidance comes from the Clinical Director during the first six months. Our Responsible Officer coordinates a mentor from six months of joining Musgrove Park Hospital.

Management Arrangements

Accountability

Managerially accountable to the Associate Medical Director.

Conditions of Service

The appointee will be required to maintain General Medical Council (GMC) full and specialist registration with a licence to practice and revalidation, and should follow the GMC's Code of Good Medical Practice.

The successful applicant will be employed under the Terms and Conditions for Consultants (England) 2003 and will receive a salary detailed in the national pay circular for medical and dental staff. The details of the Terms and Conditions for Consultants can be found on the NHS Employers website: www.nhsemployers.org

The salary and incremental increases are subject to annual review and in accordance with the National NHS Terms and Conditions of Service for Consultants in England.

Medical Degree and Royal College membership or equivalent

Full registration with the GMC and a licence to practice.

Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics \& Gynaecology or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of interview. Candidates applying via the Portfolio Pathway must already be on the Specialist Register.

Relevant CCT or equivalent (or within 6 months of interview).

Advance training in high\-risk antenatal services or maternal medicine (ATSM / SITM or equivalent).
