Construction Buyer

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and commercially minded Construction Buyer to join our team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day\-to\-day purchasing requirements across our construction projects, ensuring materials, plant, equipment and services are sourced competitively, ordered efficiently and delivered to site when required.

This is a hands\-on role suited to someone who understands the pace and demands of the construction industry and is confident dealing with suppliers, site teams and project managers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day\-to\-day procurement of construction materials, products, plant, equipment and site services.

  • Review construction drawings, specifications and material requirements to ensure accurate purchasing.

  • Prepare and review material take\-offs and bills of quantities where required.

  • Obtain, compare and negotiate supplier quotations to achieve competitive pricing and best value.

  • Raise, place and manage purchase orders in line with project requirements and company procedures.

  • Source materials in accordance with project programmes, specifications and required delivery dates.

  • Liaise closely with Site Managers, Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors and Estimators to understand purchasing requirements.

  • Process and manage material and plant requisitions from site teams.

  • Arrange and manage plant and equipment hire, including bookings, returns and collections.

  • Monitor deliveries to site and proactively deal with shortages, discrepancies, delays and damaged materials.

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and merchants.

  • Identify and develop relationships with new suppliers where required.

  • Negotiate prices, lead times, payment terms and delivery arrangements.

  • Maintain up\-to\-date knowledge of construction materials, suppliers, market pricing and lead times.

  • Support the commercial and estimating teams with material pricing, supplier information and tender/post\-tender enquiries.

  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and value engineering without compromising quality or project requirements.

  • Review and verify supplier invoices against purchase orders and delivery notes.

  • Maintain accurate procurement records, including purchase orders, quotations, delivery notes and supplier correspondence.

  • Assist with resolving supplier queries and payment/invoice issues.

  • Ensure procurement is carried out in accordance with company procedures, health \& safety requirements and relevant legislation.

  • Take responsibility for company\-issued equipment and ensure it is used appropriately.

  • Undertake any other duties reasonably required in line with the role.
About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience working as a Buyer within the construction industry.

  • MUST HAVE \- 10 years experience in construction.

  • Good knowledge of construction materials, products, plant and equipment.

  • Experience sourcing materials and obtaining competitive supplier quotations.

  • The ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications.

  • Experience with material take\-offs and bills of quantities.

  • Strong negotiation and supplier management skills.

  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Strong attention to detail and commercial awareness.

  • Good communication skills, with the confidence to liaise with suppliers, site teams and senior management.

  • A proactive approach to problem\-solving and the ability to work effectively under pressure.

  • Good IT skills and experience using Microsoft Office and purchasing/order systems.
