About the role
Octopus is building a new business line delivering low-cost, reliable, clean energy and faster speed-to-power for datacenters and large industrials. The deals are first-of-a-kind: private wire, behind-the-meter generation and storage, flexible load, novel grid connections.
This is a quantitative role with direct exposure to large-scale innovative power projects. You'll own the project model, build pricing strategies and directly participate to final investment decisions.
What you'll do
- Own the project model for each opportunity - generation, BESS, flexible load, network cost; capex, opex, revenue stack, IRR, downside cases. Build project-specific models while developing toolings and standard assumptions to support our growing pipeline
- Price the offer. Turn a customer's load profile and reliability requirement into a deliverable price and structure - tariff, PPA, tolling, availability-based - and show which one allocates risk sensibly for both sides.
- Value the flex. Model storage and flexible load across wholesale, Balancing Mechanism, ancillary services and Capacity Market. Quantify network charges (TNUoS, DUoS, BSUoS), curtailment and connection options.
- Develop the business case. Build internal and external presentations to support from indicative customer proposals to project final investment decisions.
- Track the portfolio and read the market. Monitor live projects against approved cases - spend, milestones, connection dates - and identify early and quantify regulatory change (connections reform, REMA, network charging). Support term sheets and diligence from indicative to signed.
- 3–5 years in a numerate commercial role - infrastructure or renewables development, project finance, banking, energy trading or origination, strategy or energy consultancy.
- Financial modelling from first principles: DCF, IRR, scenarios and sensitivities. You can build a model someone else can follow and eventually develop it as a standard tool for other team members to use.
- Advanced knowledge of GB/European power markets, and how network and connection costs land on a project.
- Advanced Excel and Python
- Able to take a messy, incomplete problem to a clear recommendation
- Quantitative degree - economics, engineering, finance, maths, physics - or equivalent experience.
Datacenters, large industrial load or behind-the-meter/private wire projects; BESS revenue stacking; a PPA, tolling or connection agreement taken to signature; Aurora, PLEXOS or equivalent.
