We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Legal Counsel to join the Octopus Energy Group Legal Team in London.
We’re a small, ambitious team of 8 advising on all legal aspects of our rapidly growing global business. We’re looking for a lawyer who can turn their hand to anything, and having a solid founding in corporate and/or commercial law with a desire to take ownership of broader matters will make you a great fit.
No two days are the same at Octopus Energy. This role offers a challenging and exciting opportunity to work on a wide range of legal matters, including M&As, Investments and other legal work where you can take ownership of your work from day one.

What you’ll do…

  • Lead Corporate & Governance Matters: This means supporting on M&A, acquisitions, equity investments, employee share schemes, and core corporate governance.

  • Draft & Negotiate Commercial Contracts: This means you’ll get to handle complex commercial agreements, including key partnerships, tech licensing, innovative trials, customer-facing terms, and vendor supply agreements.

  • Provide Pragmatic Advisory Support: We move fast as a business so our legal team has to move fast as well. You’ll offer fast, commercial advice across diverse day-to-day matters including data protection, IP management, competition, and general compliance.

  • Scale International Operations: You’ll support our global expansion efforts as we enter new international markets and establish new entities.

  • Manage External Counsel: You’ll work directly with our small panel of external law firms on high-value or specialist transactions, ensuring work aligns with our internal business goals.

  • Drive Business Strategy: You'll collaborate directly with senior business leaders across all functions, operating within our flat hierarchy. You love to work with all kinds of people - you’ve got no functional shoulder pads - it’s not ‘my team versus other teams’, it’s ‘we’re all working together to change the energy system globally, and I’ll lend anyone a hand’.
What you'll need...
  • To be fully qualified lawyer in the UK or similar common law jurisdiction, we’re most interested in the “right” person, but as a guide, you'll have around 2-4 years post qualification experience.

  • You’ll need solid founding in corporate and/or commercial law. In-house experience (or private practice with an in-house secondment) in a fast-paced environment is ideal.

  • You’ll need to be comfortable taking end-to-end ownership of projects with light supervision, taking the initiative to get involved in acquisition steps, and executing tasks independently.

  • You have a pragmatic, business-first approach to risk. You know how to unblock deals rather than just spot problems.

  • You'll need the ability to juggle competing deadlines, multi-task, and make firm decisions on legal queries in a fast-paced setting. You’re pretty good at managing your day, we’re only human, but generally you can juggle a few balls and focus on what’s important.

  • To be genuinely passionate for Octopus Energy’s mission and what we're doing here!
