Stepford Contracts delivers Civil Engineering and infrastructure works exclusively for local authorities across the central belt of Scotland, and beyond. Our workload includes streetworks, roadworks, drainage, public realm streetscape, street lighting, bridge maintenance and road surfacing schemes.

We are looking to appoint a Construction Buyer to manage purchasing, supplier pricing, material ordering, plant buying, plant hire arrangements and supplier coordination across our live and upcoming contracts.

The Role

The position involves supporting project delivery by ensuring materials, plant, equipment and supplier services are procured or hired on time, at the right quality and at competitive market rates. A key part of the role will involve the buying and hiring of construction plant, equipment, tools and associated site resources. This will include arranging plant hire, managing live plant hire sheets, tracking plant on and off hire, coordinating deliveries and collections, monitoring hire periods, checking hire costs and ensuring that plant is available when required by site teams.

Typical duties will include:

· Purchasing construction materials, plant, equipment, tools and supplier services.

· Arranging the hire of construction plant, equipment, tools and temporary site resources.

· Obtaining, comparing and recording quotations from suppliers, including construction plant, equipment and materials.

· Raising and tracking purchase orders, hire orders, delivery notes, off\-hire confirmations and supplier documentation.

· Maintaining live plant hire sheets for all active sites and contracts.

· Monitoring plant currently on hire, including location, start dates, expected off\-hire dates, weekly hire costs and responsible site contacts.

· Coordinating plant deliveries, exchanges, breakdown replacements and collections with supervisors, engineers and plant hire suppliers.

· Ensuring plant is off\-hired promptly when no longer required to avoid unnecessary hire costs.

· Checking plant hire invoices against live hire sheets, purchase orders, agreed rates and actual hire periods.

· Maintaining approved supplier and plant hire company records, including rates, availability, reliability and service performance.

· Negotiating pricing, hire rates, delivery terms and supplier agreements.

· Supporting tender pricing through supplier, subcontractor and plant hire enquiries.

· Coordinating urgent site requirements with supervisors, engineers, suppliers and subcontractors.

· Building reliable supplier and plant hire relationships while protecting Stepford Contracts commercially.

Requirements

· Experience in construction buying, procurement, estimating support, plant hire coordination or supplier management is preferred.

· Good knowledge of construction materials, plant hire, small tools, site equipment and subcontract packages.

· Experience managing plant hire records, hire sheets, off\-hire procedures or similar cost control systems would be advantageous.

· Commercial awareness with strong negotiation and organisation skills.

· Ability to manage multiple orders, hire items, suppliers and deadlines accurately.

· Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel and email systems. A very good working knowledge of Excel is required, including use of basic formulas, filters and conditional formatting.

· Ability to maintain accurate live spreadsheets for plant hire, materials, purchase orders and supplier records.

· Professional communication skills with suppliers, plant hire companies, subcontractors and internal teams.
