Job summary

We are looking for a Financial Cashier to join our Finance team at the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO).

You will manage cash flow and treasury operations for UKHO and IC‑ENC, ensuring funds are available to meet business needs while investing surplus balances effectively. This includes overseeing all payments across BACS, CHAPS, foreign currency platforms and SAP, as well as completing weekly bank reconciliations and maintaining strong financial controls.

You will also act as the organisation’s VAT lead—providing guidance, ensuring compliance, maximising VAT recovery and submitting statutory returns. As the main contact for auditors and external partners such as Lloyds Bank and HMRC, you’ll support audit queries and help the organisation stay compliant and financially well‑governed.

Hybrid working

This job role can be worked on a hybrid basis, which is an informal, non\-contractual and voluntary arrangement, working between the office in Taunton and remotely within the UK. However, as this is a leadership role, it is expected that the successful candidate will attend our offices at least 40% of their working time.

Job description


  • Managing the short and medium\-term cash flows for both the UKHO and IC\-ENC, including identification of cash requirements to meet business needs and investment of surplus funds.

  • Processing of all BACS payments, including payroll, through the internal finance system (SAP) and Lloyds Bank. Processing of all foreign currency payments and investments through both systems. Processing of miscellaneous payments via CHAPs.

  • Responsibility for monitoring all aspects of financial control procedures.

  • Performing weekly bank reconciliations.

  • Focal UKHO point for VAT expert advice and guidance. Ensuring UKHO and IC\-ENC compliance with VAT regulations and maximising opportunities for VAT recovery and submission of the statutory VAT returns.

  • Awareness of existing and emerging payment engines (PayPal, Stripe, etc) and how they affect cash management.

  • Main point of contact for all treasury and VAT queries from internal and external auditors.

  • You must have previous experience of financial accounting and cash management and VAT rules and reporting.

  • Be able to demonstrate experience in application of sound financial control procedures and the ability to perform detailed financial reconciliations. You should be organised and accurate in your work.

  • Be able to make effective decisions independently and work on your own.

Interview Process:

  • Single Stage face\-to\-face Interview at our Headquarters in Taunton, Somerset.

  • You will be contacted to book a suitable slot if you are shortlisted.

  • Interview will be with a panel of no more than 3 people and will last approx. 45 mins
Onboarding Checks:

In the event you are offered a role with us, you will be required to go through Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks which will include Employment and Right to Work Checks.
