Café Manager
General information
The Eastgate Theatre \& Arts Centre is an independent, community\-based venue in the heart of Peebles. We have a flexible 200\-seat auditorium for live performances and cinema screenings, a studio for classes, workshops and small\-scale events, and a licensed café. The Eastgate is run by a small, dedicated staff team, supported by a fantastic group of local volunteers.
Our annual programme includes around 140 live performances and 160 film screenings, alongside a participation programme offering creative classes each week for all ages and abilities. The events programme features internationally acclaimed artists, national touring companies, and locally produced work by community organisations, artists and practitioners. We also produce small festivals, special events, and community projects each year, and work with partners across the Scottish Borders on creative initiatives.
Role and Responsibilities
The Café Manager is responsible for the performance and day\-to\-day operation of the Eastgate’s café and bar, ensuring excellent customer service, high standards, and efficient delivery in line with our overall business strategy. The role reports to the Executive \& Creative Director and involves managing café/bar staff, casual workers, and volunteers.
The café is a key part of the Eastgate experience \- a friendly, welcoming and inclusive space for audiences, participants, and visitors. The Café Manager plays a central role in maintaining this reputation, leading by example and motivating a team to deliver exceptional service.
Main tasks:
· Maintain a high\-quality food, beverage and drinks service with a focus on variety, seasonality and customer appeal.
· Ensure all operations meet relevant food hygiene and safety standards.
· Ensure compliance with Scottish licensing regulations, including appropriate staff training.
· Oversee correct use and maintenance of equipment, keeping all areas clean, safe, and presentable.
· Plan and deliver catering for events and private hires.
· Manage supplier relationships to ensure best value.
· Monitor and manage the catering budget, including efficient stock control.
· Accurately record and reconcile daily takings.
· Contribute to planning and developing café/bar and catering facilities in line with business strategy.
· Manage rotas for café/bar staff and the cleaner, aiming to provide schedules at least four weeks in advance.
General duties:
· Provide a friendly, welcoming service to all customers.
· Maintain good knowledge of Eastgate events, activities and facilities.
· Take part in regular fire drills and health \& safety procedures.
· Ensure security of the theatre, its staff, and customers.
· Undertake other reasonable duties as required by the Executive \& Creative Director.
· Work within the Eastgate’s policies, including Equality, Diversity \& Inclusion, and Health \& Safety.
Person specification
This post requires a committed, enthusiastic individual with a demonstrable interest in customer service, a knowledge of legislation and standards relating to café, bar and catering work, along with some experience of staff management and financial control.
Essential
· Elementary Food Hygiene certificate.
· Experience in café, bar or catering work.
· Strong commitment to customer service.
· Experience in managing or supervising staff.
· Budget management and stock control skills.
· Ability to work well as part of a team.
Desirable
· Personal Licence holder.
· Knowledge of catering suppliers.
· Excellent communication and IT skills.
· Interest in theatre, arts, and live events.
All employees of the Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre are expected to work cooperatively together, and to provide essential cover for each other within a flexible, customer\-focused team.
Terms and conditions
This is a full\-time post, reporting to the Executive \& Creative Director, with a salary of £28,000\. The job involves a working week of 35 hours (excluding meal breaks), generally scheduled flexibly across four or five days out of seven. The café currently opens six or seven days each week, so the job entails a shift pattern that is likely to include evening and weekend work. The holiday entitlement is 20 days per year plus 10 public holidays (or days in lieu when the venue is open during public holidays).
