Applicants who do not meet the essential criteria will be considered under the Annex 21 training programme, where whilst undergoing training, they will be paid a 70% of the top of Band 6 and on completion of training will then move on to Band 6 scale.

The Role

The post holder will perform a wide range of routine and specialist diagnostic investigations within Haematology and Blood Transfusion, using advanced scientific techniques and equipment to analyse patient samples and support accurate diagnosis. They will provide professional advice to clinicians and healthcare staff regarding appropriate test selection and expected turnaround times.

Working independently, the Biomedical Scientist will be responsible for the accurate operation of complex laboratory equipment, applying specialist knowledge to interpret results, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure high standards of service delivery.

The role also involves contributing to the development of others by mentoring less experienced Biomedical Scientists and supporting the training and supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants.

In this key role, you will:

  • Work independently as an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to deliver accurate and timely laboratory testing, ensuring a high standard of patient care and contributing to effective diagnosis and treatment.

  • Validate and authorise routine and complex test results, communicate critical findings to clinicians, and recommend further investigations or actions in line with departmental policies.

  • Adhere to all relevant Standard Operating Procedures, quality management systems, health and safety regulations, and data protection legislation, maintaining high standards of practice within the laboratory environment.

  • Prioritise workloads, supervise and support trainee staff, contribute to training activities, and ensure efficient use of resources to maintain continuity and effectiveness of laboratory services.
What You'll Bring:
  • BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, which is acceptable for Health Professions Council registration.

  • Formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures.

  • Evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice.
