Assistant Manager - People & Compliance Lead
Set within 84 acres of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside near Thirsk, Monk Park Farm is a growing family visitor attraction bringing together animals, outdoor and indoor play, food and drink, visitor activities, and major seasonal events.
Our team works across visitor services, catering, animal care, maintenance, and events to create safe, enjoyable, and memorable days out for our visitors. As the farm continues to grow, we are strengthening our management team to ensure our people are well supported, our supervisors are confident and consistent, and our health, safety and compliance standards keep pace with the development of the business.
This newly created position offers the opportunity to make a real impact on how Monk Park Farm operates and develops. Reporting to the General Manager and Operations Manager, you will join the management team, support and develop supervisors and take the lead on our day\-to\-day people and safety processes.
You will also act as duty manager on agreed days, providing a visible management presence and supporting the safe and effective operation of the attraction. The primary focus of the role is people management and health, safety, and compliance, with Duty Management supporting rather than replacing the operational leadership responsibilities of the General Manager and Operations \& Visitor Experience Manager. This is a visible, hands\-on leadership role for someone who enjoys working with people, spending time across the operation and turning policies and procedures into consistent working practices.
For someone who enjoys being active and involved rather than permanently office based, this is a rewarding opportunity to develop a growing team while working in a varied and unique countryside environment.
What you will be responsible for
· Managing staff induction, onboarding, training records, and probationary reviews.
· Coordinating rotas and managing holiday, day\-off and other leave requests.
· Ensuring sickness and absence is recorded, monitored, and followed up appropriately.
· Supporting the fair and consistent management of conduct, performance, disciplinary and grievance matters.
· Coaching and developing supervisors to manage their teams, safety responsibilities, and standards confidently.
· Ensuring required health, safety, hygiene, and compliance checks are completed properly and on time.
· Writing, reviewing, and maintaining risk assessments and safe working procedures.
· Conducting site inspections and ensuring incidents, defects and corrective actions are properly recorded and followed through to completion.
· Acting as Duty Manager on agreed days, providing management presence, and supporting the safe and effective operation of the farm.
What we are looking for
You will have experience supervising or managing people in a busy operational workplace. You should have a practical understanding of HR and health and safety processes, strong organisational skills, and the confidence to manage sensitive issues and difficult conversations.
We are looking for someone who is visible, approachable, fair, and consistent. You will support people to succeed while also being prepared to challenge poor conduct, unsafe practices, and falling standards. You will be comfortable moving between coaching a supervisor, reviewing a risk assessment, following up an incident, and supporting a busy day at the attraction.
Experience within a visitor attraction, farm, zoo, hospitality, leisure, or another public\-facing operation would be beneficial. IOSH, NEBOSH, first aid or similar training would also be an advantage, although relevant experience and a willingness to develop your skills are equally important.
Working at the farm
Animal welfare is an important part of Monk Park Farm. You do not need to join us as an animal expert, but you must be willing to learn about the species in our care and complete relevant training. The role may occasionally include appropriate hands\-on support with animals once you have been trained and assessed as competent.
This is a full\-time, on\-site position working five days per week. Regular weekend and school holiday work is required, as these are our busiest and most important operating periods.
How to apply
Please send your CV and a short covering statement explaining why your experience is suited to this role. We would also like you to include an example of how you have improved people management, health and safety or operational standards in a previous position.
Monk Park Farm is committed to fair recruitment and providing a safe, inclusive workplace. Reasonable adjustments are available throughout the recruitment process.
