Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a (E\&P) SCADA Assistant Design Engineer to support the delivery of safe, efficient and innovative railway design solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in engineering principles, good problem\-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. A keen interest in developing technical expertise and contributing to the improvement of the UK rail network is essential.

About the team.

Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers.

As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles, ranging from pure engineering to project management. We design and influence every part of the railway, including structures, track, traction power, level crossings, signalling and accessibility schemes which are essential to keep our stations moving.

What does the average day look like?

As an Assistant Design Engineer, no two days are quite the same. You'll play a key role in shaping safe, reliable and sustainable railway solutions \- from analysing project briefs and challenging proposals, to developing and refining engineering options that balance safety, performance, cost and environmental impact. Your day might involve reviewing standards, carrying out risk assessments, drawing on lessons learned from past projects, and working closely with colleagues across different disciplines to ensure robust designs. You'll contribute to option selection, prepare technical reports, and help create the data packages needed to move designs forward. Along the way, you'll support projects through early GRIP stages, manage engineering interfaces with other programmes, and provide guidance to junior team members \- all while helping to keep Britain's rail network running safely and efficiently.

Your experience and skills
------------------------------

Essential Criteria

  • A demonstrable aptitude for option development.

  • Strong evaluation and decision\-making skills.

  • A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline (SCADA)and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.

  • An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.

  • An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.

  • Construction design management, risk assessment and external audit competencies.

Desirable Criteria
  • An engineering degree or equivalent industry\-recognised training qualification.

  • Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution.

  • Experience in design, installation and maintenance in the principle discipline.

  • Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.

  • Knowledge of RTUs, DNP3, IP networking, telecommunication networks and IEC 61850\.
