At Sgiliau Cyf, we are dedicated to providing a supportive, nurturing and engaging alternative education environment for young people aged 11–16 with Additional Learning Needs, autism, behavioural needs, social and emotional difficulties, and barriers to mainstream education.
Our aim is to help every pupil feel safe, valued, understood and successful through positive relationships, tailored learning, wellbeing support, practical activities and accredited qualifications.
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, adaptable and caring ALN and Wellbeing Support Tutor to join our growing team.
The Role
This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. You will work with pupils in small groups and one\-to\-one sessions, depending on the needs of the day.
The successful candidate must be dynamic, versatile, calm under pressure and able to quickly adapt activities and approaches to suit different pupils and situations.
The role combines education, wellbeing, relationship building, behaviour support, paperwork, practical activities and safeguarding responsibilities to help pupils engage positively with learning and everyday life.
Responsibilities Include
- Delivering engaging and interactive sessions tailored to pupils’ individual needs.
- Teaching basic English, Maths, IT, employability, wellbeing and personal development.
- Supporting pupils with social, emotional, behavioural and additional learning needs.
- Building positive and trusting relationships with young people.
- Creating a calm, safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment.
- Supporting pupils through challenging behaviour using patience, consistency and positive behaviour strategies.
- Encouraging participation, confidence, independence and engagement.
- Delivering and supporting activities such as cooking, sport, football, badminton, wellbeing walks, art, music, IT and practical life skills.
- Using creative approaches and alternative methods to engage pupils.
- Supporting learners to complete accredited qualifications where required.
- Marking learner work, giving feedback and helping pupils improve.
- Organising folders and ensuring learner work is completed neatly, dated and stored correctly.
- Supporting staff and pupils whenever needed.
- Travelling between Sgiliau sites and supporting learner\-related activities where required.
- Participating in training, meetings and professional development opportunities.
The successful candidate must be organised and able to complete paperwork accurately and professionally. This will include:
- Completing daily registers, learner records and session notes.
- Recording learner progress, engagement, behaviour and achievements.
- Supporting Individual Learning Plans, learner reviews and qualification tracking.
- Completing basic skills tracking and progress updates where required.
- Supporting qualification paperwork, evidence collection and assessment records.
- Ensuring learner work is marked, dated, organised and stored correctly.
- Completing incident records, behaviour logs and relevant reports where required.
- Reporting concerns clearly and promptly to the appropriate member of staff.
- Maintaining accurate records in line with Sgiliau policies, GDPR and awarding body requirements.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility at Sgiliau. The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Follow all safeguarding and child protection procedures at all times.
- Report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Maintain professional boundaries with learners.
- Promote a safe, respectful and nurturing environment.
- Recognise signs of harm, neglect, exploitation, bullying, emotional distress or abuse.
- Record concerns accurately, clearly and professionally.
- Attend safeguarding training and follow safer working practices.
- Support learners’ wellbeing, dignity, safety and emotional regulation.
- Work in line with Sgiliau’s safeguarding, behaviour, equality and staff conduct policies.
All staff are expected to help maintain a safe, clean and professional learning environment. Duties will include:
- Tidying classrooms and learning spaces at the end of the day.
- Wiping down tables and shared work areas.
- Putting resources, equipment and learner work away safely.
- Ensuring rooms are left clean, organised and ready for the next day.
- Reporting any damage, hazards or maintenance concerns.
- Supporting general centre routines to keep the provision safe and welcoming.
Our pupils can sometimes present with challenging behaviour and may require additional emotional support, patience, consistency and encouragement.
Success within our provision comes from building positive relationships, understanding pupils’ needs and backgrounds, and creating an environment where they feel respected, cared for and supported.
We are looking for someone who genuinely takes an interest in young people’s lives and wellbeing and can provide both structure and encouragement while remaining calm, professional and consistent under pressure.

- GCSE English and Maths Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent.
- Full UK driving licence and access to own transport.
- Experience working with children, young people or vulnerable learners.
- Confidence supporting pupils with ALN, autism, SEBD or barriers to learning.
- Ability to remain calm, professional and consistent when supporting challenging behaviour.
- An Enhanced DBS certificate or willingness to complete an enhanced DBS check.
- Registered with EWC, or willingness to register where required.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and a certificate of achievement of Safeguarding Training.
- Teaching Assistant Level 2, 3 or 4 qualification.
- Tutoring, teaching, youth work, mentoring, coaching or alternative provision experience.
- Experience working within SEN/ALN or alternative education settings.
- Experience supporting young people with behavioural needs.
- Sports, wellbeing, mentoring, coaching or youth work experience.
- Experience delivering accredited qualifications.
- Knowledge of Curriculum for Wales.
- Welsh language skills or willingness to promote Welsh language across learning.
- £22,000 – £27,000 FTE, pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications.

Our provision follows the school term\-time calendar. Holidays are built into the schedule; therefore, additional holidays during term time are not permitted.
- Staff are expected to support daily routines, including learner supervision, preparation, paperwork, marking, folder organisation and end\-of\-day tidying within working hours.
- Must be able to travel between Sgiliau locations depending on centre requirements.
Stage 1: Interview process.
Stage 2: Successful candidates may be invited back to complete a short 20\-minute micro\-teach session with pupils. The topic can be chosen by the candidate.
Pay: £22,000\.00\-£27,000\.00 per year
