Job Summary
This is a varied, hands\-on accounts role sitting within a small and close\-knit Finance team supporting a £36–38 million turnover business. As the Accounts Assistant, you will take primary ownership of the monthly payroll process while also managing accounts payable, supplier relationships, and bank reconciliations. You will work closely with the Finance Manager and a second Accounts Assistant, and will be expected to provide cover across functions when needed.
Responsibilities
- Own and process the monthly payroll from start to finish, ensuring accuracy and compliance with HMRC requirements
- Manage PAYE submissions, RTI filings, and pension auto\-enrolment contributions
- Handle starter and leaver processing, statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP), and pay queries from employees
- Liaise with HR on payroll\-related changes and maintain accurate payroll records
- Provide payroll cover for Accounts Assistant 2 when require
- Process supplier invoices accurately and in a timely manner, ensuring correct coding to nominal ledger
- Manage the supplier payment run, including preparation and authorisation support
- Maintain supplier accounts, resolve queries, and manage the AP inbox
- Reconcile supplier statements and escalate discrepancies promptly
- Post daily bank transactions and perform monthly bank reconciliations
- Ensure all reconciling items are investigated and cleared within agreed timescales
- Support the Finance Manager with month\-end close tasks as required
- Assist with the preparation of monthly management accounts schedules as directed
- Support the Finance Assistant with ad hoc admin tasks during busy periods
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives and systems projects
- Cover Accounts Assistant 2 responsibilities during absence or leave
- Proven experience processing payroll in\-house (bureau experience considered)
- Solid working knowledge of accounts payable processes
- Comfortable working in a small team where flexibility is key
- High attention to detail with a methodical approach to workload management
- Good IT skills, including Excel; experience with accounting software (Sage, Xero, QuickBooks or similar)
- Strong communication skills — able to handle employee pay queries professionally and calmly
Pay: £26,000\.00\-£30,000\.00 per year
