At Pickstock, we are seeking an experienced and driven Abattoir Manager to take full responsibility for the day to day management and performance of our Abattoir department. This is a key leadership role, responsible for ensuring the operation runs safely, efficiently, legally, and in line with the highest standards of animal welfare, food safety, quality, and compliance.
About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will lead and develop a team of Supervisors and Operatives, ensuring production targets, compliance standards, operational KPIs, and people objectives are consistently achieved.
You will play a pivotal role in driving accountability, continuous improvement, operational excellence, and a positive workplace culture across the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the day to day operation of the Abattoir department.
- Deliver departmental KPIs relating to safety, yield, labour, quality, efficiency, waste reduction, and animal welfare.
- Ensure full compliance with legal requirements, customer specifications, BRCGS standards, SOPs, HACCP controls, and company procedures.
- Promote and maintain exceptional animal welfare standards throughout all operations.
- Lead, coach, and develop Supervisors and Operatives to maximise performance and capability.
- Drive a culture of accountability, engagement, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
- Monitor operational performance and implement corrective actions where required.
- Manage labour resources effectively in line with production plans and budgets.
- Work closely with Technical, Engineering, Boning Hall, Yard, Lairage, HR, and wider operational teams.
- Support audits, customer visits, improvement projects, and compliance initiatives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with the FSA, veterinary teams, auditors, and external stakeholders.
You will be an experienced operational leader with a strong background in abattoir management and a passion for delivering high standards across safety, compliance, welfare, quality, and people management.
Essential Skills \& Experience
- Previous management experience within an abattoir environment.
- Strong knowledge of animal welfare, food safety, quality, and compliance requirements.
- Proven leadership and people management experience within a fast\-paced production environment.
- Sound understanding of Health \& Safety legislation and operational controls.
- Strong communication, organisation, problem solving, and decision making skills.
- Experience analysing performance data and implementing operational improvements.
- Good IT skills and experience using operational reporting and time \& attendance systems.
- Ability to lead effectively under pressure whilst maintaining high standards.
- Food Safety Level 3\.
- HACCP Level 3\.
- IOSH or equivalent Health \& Safety qualification.
- Animal Welfare training or experience.
- First Aid qualification.
- Experience working with the FSA and external auditors.
- Continuous improvement and root cause analysis experience within food manufacturing or primary processing.
