About the role

We are looking for friendly, caring and reliable Volunteer Befrienders to support older people in their own homes and help reduce loneliness and social isolation.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference to someone's day through friendship, conversation and regular contact.

As a Volunteer Befriender, you may spend time with an older person in their home, have a chat over a cup of tea, accompany them on a visit to their GP or other appointments, and make regular check\-in calls to make sure they are doing okay.

You do not need previous professional care experience. Full training and support will be provided.

What you will do

Your role may include:

• Visiting an older person in their own home


• Providing friendly companionship and conversation


• Having a cup of tea and a chat


• Listening and providing emotional and social support


• Accompanying them to GP appointments when appropriate


• Supporting them to attend local appointments or community activities


• Making regular telephone check\-in calls


• Helping them maintain social connections and feel less isolated


• Encouraging independence and confidence


• Reporting any concerns to the appropriate member of our team


• Maintaining confidentiality and respecting the person's privacy and dignity

You will be:

• Friendly, patient and approachable


• A good listener


• Reliable and dependable


• Respectful of older people and their individual needs


• Comfortable visiting people in their homes


• Comfortable having conversations and building friendships


• Able to maintain appropriate professional boundaries


• Able to respect confidentiality


• Willing to complete the required DBS check and training

DBS and safeguarding

An appropriate DBS check will be provided as part of the recruitment process, along with safeguarding checks where required.

Full training will be provided before you begin volunteering, including guidance on safeguarding, confidentiality, boundaries and what to do if you have concerns about someone's wellbeing.

Travel allowance

A travel allowance will be provided for approved volunteering\-related travel, in accordance with our organisation's travel policy.

This is a voluntary befriending and companionship role. Volunteers are not expected to provide personal care, nursing care, medication administration or medical advice.

When accompanying someone to a GP appointment, the volunteer's role is to provide companionship and practical support. Volunteers should not make medical decisions or provide medical advice on behalf of the person.

All volunteers will be expected to follow our safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety and lone\-working procedures.
