James Engineering Constructions Limited is looking for an enthusiastic and technically minded person to join our Drawing and Design Office as a Trainee Chimney and Secondary Structures Steel CAD Design and Detailing Technician.

This is an excellent opportunity for a school or college leaver, T Level student, engineering apprentice or junior CAD technician looking to develop a long\-term career in engineering design, 3D modelling and structural steel detailing.

Previous specialist CAD or steel detailing experience is not essential. Full training will be provided.

We are looking for someone with good maths and computer skills, strong spatial awareness, excellent attention to detail and a genuine interest in engineering.

What You'll Be Doing

Working alongside experienced designers, engineers, fabricators and Contract Managers, you will be trained to:

• Produce 2D engineering drawings and 3D models


• Model structural steelwork, industrial chimneys and flue systems


• Produce general arrangement and fabrication drawings


• Detail welded and bolted steel connections


• Prepare material and fabrication information


• Interpret architects' and structural engineers' drawings


• Coordinate steelwork with surrounding structures and services


• Assist with material take\-offs and bills of materials


• Work with our fabrication workshop to ensure designs can be manufactured efficiently


• Develop an understanding of engineering standards and fabrication tolerances


• Follow projects from initial design through manufacture and installation

Our projects include:

• Industrial chimneys and flue systems


• Data\-centre exhaust structures


• Secondary structural steelwork


• Equipment support structures


• Platforms, walkways, stairs and handrails


• Architectural and specialist fabricated steelwork

You'll work on projects across the construction, energy, data\-centre, processing and defence sectors.

Who We're Looking For

You don't need previous industry experience.

We're more interested in finding someone who has:

• A genuine interest in engineering, CAD and design

• A reliable and organised approach to work

Qualifications

Suitable applicants may have or be working towards:

• GCSE Mathematics and English


• Engineering or Design \& Technology GCSE


• Engineering T Level


• BTEC Engineering


• Level 2 or Level 3 Engineering qualification


• A Levels including Maths, Physics or Design subjects


• CAD or engineering drawing qualifications

Applicants with strong GCSE results and the right attitude and aptitude are also encouraged to apply.

Experience with AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, Tekla or similar software would be useful but is not essential.

Training \& Career Development

You will receive structured training in areas including:

• 2D CAD


• Advanced 3D steel modelling


• Structural steel detailing


• Chimney and flue design


• Fabrication methods


• Welding and bolted construction


• Engineering drawings and tolerances


• Design coordination


• British and European engineering standards

Where appropriate, the position may be combined with a recognised Level 3 Engineering Design Technician Apprenticeship or other suitable engineering qualification.

There is a clear opportunity to progress through:

Trainee CAD Design \& Detailing Technician → CAD Design \& Detailing Technician → Senior Technician → Lead Detailer / Design Engineer / Drawing Office Project Lead

Salary \& Benefits

Starting salary: £20,000\+ per annum, depending on age, qualifications and previous experience.

Salary will be reviewed as your skills and responsibilities develop.

More experienced junior applicants with existing CAD or engineering experience may be offered a higher starting salary.
