Job summary

As a test engineer, you will contribute to the quality assurance effort within a multi\-discipline development team and delivering a programme of work. You will support the test engineering capability of the squad by providing robust testing solutions for the product and providing technical expertise to more junior colleagues.

You will be responsible for contributing to the test strategy for manual and automated testing of digital services with a view to maximise test automation. These strategies will align with wider government digital standards to ensure the services are compliant and accessible to all.

You will be a part of the testing community across the department and help deliver our strategic vision by building and maintaining strong links with other test engineers across other government departments, to influence standard methodology and share insights.

If you are successful, you could be:

  • Working in a team that delivers post 16 data modelling services for a range of internal and external use cases (this post is available in Coventry, Manchester, Sheffield and London).

  • Leading, managing and delivering all aspects of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) testing within one of the projects in the Enterprise Data for Insights Division (posts available in all advertised locations).

  • Working in the Solution Delivery Team. We work on central repeatable tools that will form the backbone of the Departments services going forward. It’s an exciting area to work in with an established team (posts available in all advertised locations).

Job description

As a test engineer you will:

  • Work collaboratively with other members of your integrated delivery team, to develop a cohesive service

  • Develop comprehensive tests based on stakeholder requirements

  • Identify obstacles and escalate through appropriate processes to ensure resolution

  • Document process to support reusability and knowledge sharing within the team and department

  • Be able to code most Test Automation scenarios within existing frameworks to deliver automated quality assurance for a project.

  • Adhere to the standards and policies of best practice that have been set in the team and suggest improvement where applicable

  • Enable test status reporting within the team, via dashboards or other appropriate means so that test status is clear to the team

Person specification

Applications will be assessed against the following Essential Criteria:

  • Experience collaborating within a cross\-functional team to communicate test priorities and progress to stakeholders of varying technical backgrounds.

  • Experience identifying, analysing, and managing defects to resolution, including logging, triaging, and retesting using defect tracking tools.

  • Experience understanding, implementing, and improving test artefacts (e.g. test cases, data, plans) based on system risk profiles and business needs.

  • Experience working with and maintaining test automation frameworks, such as Selenium, Playwright, SpecFlow, or similar, to support regression and integration testing.

  • Experience working with Object\-Oriented programming frameworks, particularly in C\# or Python, to support test automation and maintainable codebases.
The following criteria are desirable. Applicants’ evidence against these criteria will be used at interview in the event of a tie break situation to make an informed decision:
  • Experience leading the testing effort for a product.

  • Experience with operating within Azure DevOps or similar cloud platform.

  • Appropriate software testing qualifications such as ISTQB Foundation in Software Testing

  • Experience of conducting and enabling non\-functional testing such as Performance, Security and Accessibility; including test types, test tools, and standards.

Stage 1: Civil Service Numerical Test (CSNT)

When you have completed your personal information, you will be asked to complete the CSNT. You must achieve the minimum pass mark to progress to the next stage.

Stage 2: Civil Service Verbal Test (CSVT)

When you have completed the CSNT, you will be asked to complete the CSVT. You must achieve the minimum pass mark to progress to the next stage.

Stage 3 \- Written Application

At application you will be asked to provide your CV and a statement of suitability. Both should be anonymised (all personal information removed, such as your name, date of birth, gender, contact information, nationality etc).

  • Your CV should include details of previous roles held and responsibilities / previous skills and experience.

  • Your statement of suitability (max 1250 words) should demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria listed in the person specification section above.
Stage 4 \- Sift

We reserve the right to increase the minimum pass mark for the CSNT and CSVT where there is a high volume of applications or a particularly strong field of candidates. Where this occurs, candidates who do not meet the revised pass mark will not progress further, and their written application will not be assessed.

Stage 5 – Interview

Those successful at sift will be invited to attend an interview.

Interviews will be on MS teams, which may be remote or from a DfE office \- we will confirm which when you are invited to an interview.

The interview will be one hour long and is made up of two parts.

Part 1 – Job related simulation

You will be given a scenario pertaining to the day\-to\-day activities of a test engineer and you will be asked to provide a high\-level description of how you would tackle the activity.

Part 2 – Questions

You will be asked questions to further assess your experience in relation to the listed essential criteria.
