James Cowie \& Co Ltd, established in 1962, is a specialist steel fabricator for the construction, infrastructure, telecommunications, renewables, and engineering sectors, manufacturing structural steelwork and metalwork.

We are looking for a motivated and commercially focused Technical Sales / Business Development Manager to join our team in Hamilton.

This is a dedicated sales and business development position, with the focus being on identifying new customers and generating new business for the company.

This is not an office\-based position. The successful candidate will be expected to travel throughout Scotland and across the wider UK to meet prospective and existing customers, attend meetings, visit sites and actively develop new business opportunities face\-to\-face.

Responsibilities

You will:

  • Research and identify potential new customers throughout Scotland and the wider UK.

  • Find and build relationships with key decision\-makers, including buyers, procurement teams, project managers and commercial contacts.

  • Make proactive outbound sales calls to prospective customers.

  • Introduce the company and explain our capabilities and product range.

  • Generate new enquiries and opportunities for our Sales team to price.

  • Follow up with prospective customers by telephone and email.

  • Re\-establish relationships with previous or lapsed customers.

  • Develop existing leads into genuine sales opportunities.

  • Arrange meetings and site visits with potential customers where appropriate.

  • Maintain accurate records of contacts, conversations, enquiries and follow\-up actions.

  • Work towards agreed weekly and monthly sales and business development targets.
What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who is naturally confident, proactive and comfortable approaching businesses and speaking to new people.

The successful candidate should have:

  • Previous experience in technical sales, B2B sales, business development or a similar role.

  • Experience within engineering, steel, construction, manufacturing, utilities or a related sector would be advantageous.

  • A strong ability to research and identify potential customers and markets.

  • Confidence making outbound telephone calls and approaching new businesses.

  • Excellent communication and relationship\-building skills.

  • A commercial mindset and an understanding of how to turn initial conversations into sales opportunities.

  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage and follow up a pipeline of prospects.

  • The ability to work independently and take ownership of developing new business.

  • A determined and persistent approach to sales without being overly aggressive.

  • Good IT skills and the ability to maintain accurate customer and prospect records.
A detailed knowledge of steel fabrication is not essential. We can provide training on our products and manufacturing capabilities. What is more important is having the ability and confidence to find the right companies, speak to the right people and create opportunities for us to quote for new work.
