Job Overview
AMS SURVEYS is seeking a dynamic, technically capable and detail\-oriented Structural Engineer to join our growing multidisciplinary team.
This is a varied role covering the surveying, assessment, design and analysis of structural systems across residential, commercial and heritage projects.
The role offers genuine scope for personal development and progression. As our structural engineering workload continues to grow, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to help develop the service, shape internal processes and, over time, build and lead a structural engineering team within AMS SURVEYS.
You will work alongside Chartered Building Surveyors, Building Surveyors and other technical professionals on a broad range of projects, including structural inspections, defect investigations, alterations, refurbishments, extensions, design work and specifications.
AMS SURVEYS has established systems, administrative processes and a dedicated client care team to support the day\-to\-day management of enquiries, appointments and clients. This allows the Structural Engineer to focus more of their time on technical work, engineering, project delivery and professional development.
Key Duties
- Undertake structural inspections, surveys and defect investigations across residential, commercial and heritage buildings.
- Develop practical and technically robust structural solutions for alterations, extensions, refurbishment and remedial works.
- Prepare structural calculations and analysis to demonstrate stability, strength, serviceability and compliance.
- Produce structural drawings, details and construction information using AutoCAD or similar software.
- Prepare technical reports, specifications and supporting documentation.
- Inspect existing structures and assess defects, movement, cracking and structural deterioration.
- Undertake site visits and construction inspections to confirm works are being completed in accordance with approved designs and specifications.
- Manage multiple projects from initial inspection and concept through to design, documentation and construction.
- Coordinate with our in\-house Building Surveying team, architects, contractors, clients and other consultants.
- Provide practical engineering input into multidisciplinary refurbishment and alteration projects.
- Develop innovative and proportionate solutions to complex structural problems.
- Contribute to the continued development of AMS SURVEYS' structural engineering services, systems and technical standards.
- As the service grows, support the recruitment, mentoring and development of additional engineering staff.
We are looking for someone with practical structural engineering experience who is comfortable working independently while also contributing to a wider multidisciplinary team.
Ideally, you will have:
- Proven experience within structural or civil engineering, with a strong background in building structures, surveying, design and construction.
- Experience undertaking structural inspections and producing clear technical reports.
- Experience designing structural alterations, extensions and remedial works.
- Strong structural analysis and calculation skills.
- Experience using structural calculation software, with Mathcad experience advantageous.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar design software desirable.
- A good understanding of traditional and modern construction methods and materials.
- Practical knowledge of relevant Building Regulations, British Standards, Eurocodes and structural design requirements.
- The ability to manage several projects simultaneously while maintaining quality and programme requirements.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical matters clearly to clients and other professionals.
- Practical construction or site experience, which would be highly advantageous.
- Experience of existing, historic or traditionally constructed buildings would also be beneficial.
This is more than a role focused solely on completing calculations and drawings.

Pay: £45,000\.00\-£60,000\.00 per year
