Staff Software Engineer - Frontend, Retail Experience

<p>The Retail Experience (RXP) squad is a high-impact team focused on transforming Toast into a world-class experience for retailers. While retail adoption has grown significantly, we consistently hear that Toast doesn’t always feel like it was built for retail.RXP’s mission is to close that gap. We identify friction across the retail customer journey — from onboarding to daily operations — and deliver cohesive, retail-first improvements across Toast’s ecosystem.</p>
<p>Our work spans the Retail module and the broader Toast platform, ensuring that retail customers feel understood and supported from day one through long-term success.</p>
<p><strong>A day in the life (Responsibilities)</strong></p>
<p>As a <strong>Staff Software Engineer</strong> on the Retail Experience team, you’ll play a leading role in designing and developing intuitive, performant, and delightful user experiences. You’ll work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to bring new features to life. <li><strong>Architect and implement</strong> modern, high-quality frontend experiences that feel intentionally designed for retail businesses.</li>
<li><strong>Collaborate deeply</strong> with Product, Design, and Platform teams to deliver cohesive improvements across a broad cross-section of Toast’s ecosystem.</li>
<li><strong>Mentor teammates</strong>, contribute to technical decisions, and help shape a strong engineering culture.</li>
<li><strong>Continuously improve</strong> UI systems and patterns, enabling rapid development of scalable features.</li>
<li><strong>Stay curious</strong>, explore emerging technologies, and find new ways to elevate the Toast Retail experience.</li>

<p><strong>What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>8-10+ years of experience building modern web applications, with a strong frontend focus.</li>
<li>Strong proficiency with <strong>React</strong>, <strong>TypeScript</strong>, and web standards (HTML5, CSS3).</li>
<li>Solid understanding of <strong>component architecture</strong>, <strong>state management</strong>, and <strong>design systems</strong>.</li>
<li>Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and shipping user-facing features.</li>
<li>Familiarity with <strong>REST APIs</strong>, <strong>GraphQL</strong>, and <strong>testing frameworks</strong> (Jest, Playwright, etc.).</li>
<li>Passion for clean, maintainable code.</li>
<li>Comfortable working in a fast-moving team, balancing quality and speed.</li>
<li>Bonus: Experience in Retail software, or designing systems for new customer vertical</li>
