Highway Data Systems (HDS) is looking for a practical and motivated Service Engineer to join our team.This is a varied, hands\-on position suited to someone with a mechanical, electrical or similar technical background who enjoys fault\-finding, problem\-solving and working with specialist equipment.

The primary focus of the role is the service, maintenance, repair, calibration, installation and technical support of HDS equipment and associated vehicle and plant\-based systems.

The position will involve a combination of workshop and site\-based work, with travel to customer and project locations throughout the UK. As part of the wider role, the successful candidate will also be trained to support our highway survey operations when required.

The Role

As an HDS Service Engineer, you will help ensure our specialist equipment remains safe, reliable, accurate and ready for use across our projects.You will carry out planned and reactive maintenance, fault diagnosis, repairs, calibration and equipment testing, as well as installations and technical support for colleagues, site teams and customers.The role will also involve attending sites to inspect equipment, investigate reported issues and assist with the installation, testing and commissioning of equipment fitted to vehicles and construction plant.As part of this varied position, you will also be trained in the operation of HDS specialist survey vehicles and equipment and may support or undertake highway survey activities when operationally required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Service, maintain and repair HDS equipment and associated systems

  • Carry out calibration, testing and verification of equipment in accordance with company procedures

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic and equipment\-related faults

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance

  • Install, test and support equipment fitted to vehicles and construction plant

  • Attend customer and project sites to inspect equipment and investigate reported faults

  • Provide practical technical support to site teams, customers and colleagues

  • Assist with equipment preparation, testing and configuration

  • Complete equipment checks and maintain accurate service, maintenance and calibration records

  • Support highway survey operations using HDS specialist vehicles and equipment when required

  • Complete relevant site, service and technical documentation

  • Take responsibility for company\-issued equipment and vehicles while in your care

  • Work safely and professionally within highway and construction environments

  • Travel to sites throughout the UK as required by the business
About You

We are looking for someone who is practical, motivated, reliable and keen to develop their technical skills.You do not need previous experience of HDS specialist systems. We are more interested in finding someone with a strong mechanical, electrical or technical foundation, a logical approach to fault\-finding and the willingness to learn.You should be comfortable working independently when required, while also being able to work effectively as part of the wider HDS team.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A full UK driving licence

  • A mechanical, electrical, engineering or similar technical background

  • Good practical fault\-finding and problem\-solving skills

  • A willingness to travel and undertake site\-based work

  • Good communication skills

  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • The ability to provide a five\-year verifiable history for vetting purposes
Experience within highways, construction plant, vehicle systems, electrical or electronic systems, hydraulics, calibration, maintenance engineering or specialist technical equipment would be advantageous, but is not essential.A valid CSCS card would be advantageous, although this can be arranged by HDS if required.Training on HDS equipment, systems, calibration procedures and survey operations will be provided.
