Job purpose

To provide web and digital technical support to the Communications team in the delivery of our online and digital communications activities, to help us meet our strategic aims and departmental goals. The main focus of the role is to drive the ongoing design, development and integration of our websites and digital communications channels, to ensure an excellent user experience. You will advise on and implement improvements to SEO and website analytics to drive engagement with our target audiences. You will also work with content, marketing and design colleagues to produce regular email newsletters and provide digital support for our communications campaigns.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the Website Manager, to ensure the RCVS websites are fully operational at all times.

  • Build a strong relationship with our web development agency, translating business needs into clear, actionable requirements.

  • Drive ongoing optimisation of website and digital service design, functionality and performance, ensuring high\-quality, accessible and user\-centred experiences across all platforms, devices and browsers.

  • Use UX best practice and user insight to refine and optimise user journeys, driving engagement and improving the effectiveness of digital services.

  • Use analytics to measure the performance of websites and digital campaigns, providing clear insight and recommendations to improve user experience and campaign effectiveness.

  • Enhance the discoverability and usability of digital content by optimising information architecture, on\-site search, and SEO, in line with evolving search and AI\-driven discovery practices.

  • Work with the Website Manager and IT department to ensure compliance with accessibility, privacy, data protection and security requirements.

  • Develop and optimise accessible email campaigns, driving engagement and supporting integrated campaign performance across digital channels.

  • Carry out usability testing and user acceptance testing (UAT) to validate changes and ensure digital services meet user needs and quality standards.

  • Support the work of our web content team and departmental web editors, including CMS training.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or with a qualification in a relevant digital or web discipline.
Required skills, knowledge and experience
  • Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS and responsive design, with the ability to apply best practice across complex digital environments.

  • Working knowledge of JavaScript and PHP, with the ability to support development, troubleshooting and enhancement of web functionality.

  • Strong understanding of UX and UI principles, with proven ability to apply these to improve usability, accessibility and end\-to\-end user journeys.

  • Demonstrable expertise in accessibility best practice, including up\-to\-date W3C standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience working effectively with third\-party web and digital agencies, including developing briefs, reviewing and quality assuring deliverables, and proactively resolving issues to support successful outcomes.

  • Experience managing and supporting CMS users across an organisation, with a strong understanding of website structure, governance and content organisation. Drupal experience is highly desirable; transferable CMS expertise is welcomed

  • Strong experience using web analytics and reporting tools — particularly Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager — to ensure robust tracking, analyse performance, and deliver actionable insight through Looker Studio dashboards and reporting.

  • Awareness of emerging discovery practices, including GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) with knowledge of how structured data enhances A working understanding of web hosting arrangements and control panel software, sufficient to support website maintenance and liaise with hosting providers.

  • Content visibility across search and AI platforms.

  • Experience developing accessible, responsive HTML emails, applying best practice to deliver high\-quality templates that support engagement and campaign performance.

  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, work independently, and deliver to deadlines in a fast\-paced digital environment.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts and influence decision\-making across a range of audiences.
Desired skills, knowledge and experience
  • Skills in design and prototyping tools, particularly Photoshop and Figma,

  • A portfolio of web/digital/mobile communications projects.

  • Project management skills and experience.
