SENIOR TECHNICAL DESIGNER

LOCATION: Blagdon, Somerset

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Senior Technical Designer at Artichoke plays a pivotal role in translating creative vision into technically precise, buildable and highly detailed design information. Operating at the heart of design and production, the Technical Designer works collaboratively with Creative Designers, Interior Designers, Project Directors, Architects, consultants, suppliers and workshop teams to ensure design intent is resolved in real\-world terms \- accounting for joinery construction, materials, manufacturing techniques, and architectural coordination

This role requires a highly diligent and collaborative individual with strong technical fluency, excellent communication skills and a passion for creating beautifully crafted spaces. The role requires a combination of deep joinery and construction knowledge, materials and building systems with the ability to think creatively, solve problems proactively and contribute positively within a team\-focused environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Leadership \& Project Delivery

  • Lead technical design development across all project phases for medium to large\-scale projects

  • Oversee the production and coordination of comprehensive technical drawing packages and specifications

  • Ensure technical design intent is fully integrated with manufacturing, construction, compliance, and installation requirements

  • Identify technical, commercial, and programme\-related risks and implement mitigation strategies proactively

  • Coordinate with consultants, statutory bodies, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure successful project delivery

  • Take lead in supporting project estimating, budgeting, and programme planning activities

  • Oversee specification development and final technical sign\-off processes for projects within responsibility

  • Ensure projects are delivered to high standards of technical quality, craftsmanship, and compliance
Team Leadership \& Mentorship
  • Lead and mentor technical design teams across multiple project stages

  • Delegate responsibilities effectively and support team development through coaching and knowledge sharing

  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior and midweight designers

  • Foster collaborative working practices across design, production, and project management teams

  • Support leadership in maintaining and improving technical standards and methodologies
Communication \& External Representation
  • Represent the practice confidently in client meetings, consultant coordination sessions, and external technical discussions

  • Act as a key technical point of contact for project teams and stakeholders

  • Present technical solutions clearly and confidently to both technical and non\-technical audiences

  • Build strong working relationships with external consultants, contractors, and suppliers
Width of View Across Practice
  • Promote and uphold the practice’s values, culture, and technical excellence

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of technical standards, systems, and workflows

  • Share knowledge across the wider practice and encourage collaborative learning

  • Support wider strategic and operational objectives of the business
KEY SKILLS \& ATTRIBUTES

Skills

  • Advanced technical detailing and CAD experience with strong technical drawing standards; AutoCAD

  • SketchUp (\& V\-ray)

  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)

  • Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel

  • Excellent knowledge of joinery construction and broad understanding of materials including stone, metal, finishes and fixings

  • Understanding of building systems including lighting, electrical, heating, drainage, water systems and M\&E coordination

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing techniques, fabrication processes and installation requirements

  • High level of commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery constraints

  • Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills

Experience And Education
  • Minimum 5\+ years’ experience in technical design, architectural joinery, interior architecture or related fields

  • Degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Furniture Design, Product Design or equivalent relevant discipline (desirable)

  • Proven experience delivering construction\-ready drawing packages for high\-end residential, bespoke joinery or heritage projects

  • Experience coordinating with architects, M\&E consultants, contractors and specialist suppliers

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating technical detailing, joinery knowledge and high\-quality project delivery
