Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our innovative engineering team. This role offers the opportunity lead in developing new and novel designs for rail borne plant and equipment.
The role requires technical leadership and implementation of installations in an efficient manner to ensure first of type and subsequent machines are delivered in accordance with the build programmes.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for mechanical and hydraulic designs of mobile and Railway plant and equipment.
Apply knowledge of mechanical systems and industry standards to engineer safe, robust, and cost\-effective solutions.
Undertake engineering calculations and design validation activities to verify fitness\-for\-purpose and statutory compliance.
Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, safety studies, and constructability workshops to drive technical excellence and manage potential risks.
Review and check technical documents, drawings, and calculations—supporting continuous improvement of design quality and compliance processes.
Share knowledge, mentor junior engineers and designers, and contribute to a proactive learning environment.
Support the preparation of technical specifications, project documentation, procurement packages, and client proposals.
Effectively manage own time in accordance with build schedule and priorities.
Prepare, update and compile the latest assembly/build documentation (General assembly, sub\-system assembly, schematics and build notes) and prepare a document pack prior to the
Duties
- Lead the development of mechanical system designs using CAD software such as SolidWorks and CAD tools, ensuring accuracy and manufacturability.
- Conduct root cause analysis on mechanical failures or performance issues to identify underlying causes and implement effective corrective actions.
- Develop detailed schematics, GD\&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and technical documentation to support manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Utilize simulation tools like Simulink and MATLAB to model system behavior, optimize designs, and validate performance under various conditions.
- Collaborate with electrical and software teams to integrate programmable logic controllers (PLCs), LabVIEW systems, and other control components into mechanical systems.
- Perform system design reviews, risk assessments, and validation testing to ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
- Support prototype development, testing, and troubleshooting by applying your strong mechanical knowledge and analytical skills.
Design for manufacturing experience
Strong maths and ability to carry out complex calculations using first principles.
Proficient with Solidworks, FEA Add in package \& PDM
Self\-driven with ability to learn and lead
Demonstratable experience in Fabricated sheet metal, bolted assemblies and machining designs.
Strong understanding of Hydraulic design principles
Rail plant background preferred but not essential
Good leadership skills
Qualifications:
BSc / Beng in Mechanical Engineering or similar
Experience 5\-10 years in mechanical design engineering roles.
Hours of Work:
Monday – Thursday 08:00 \- 17:00
Friday 08:00 – 14:30
Or,
- Condensed 4 day week – Mon\-Thurs 07:00\-16:15
- Minimum 39 Hour Week
