Job Purpose:

We are seeking a dedicated Specialist Support Lead to play a pivotal role in addressing the needs of pupils who require assistance to overcome learning barriers due to deafness. This role involves working under the direction of the Head Teacher and Hub Lead to ensure inclusive and effective learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Supporting the Pupil:

  • Assess the needs of pupils and apply specialist skills to support their learning.

  • Contribute to planning and preparing learning activities with Teaching Assistants for targeted support.

  • Deliver planned curriculum activities to groups, including hearing-impaired learners, and support differentiation within classrooms and the Hub.

  • Encourage inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.

  • Review and contribute to plans for hearing-impaired pupils for EHCP assessments and reviews.

  • Liaise with specialist services, such as Teachers of the Deaf and educational psychologists, as needed.

  • Provide feedback to pupils on their progress and achievements.

  • Foster emotional resilience and independence in pupils.

Supporting the Teacher:
  • Support the role of parents in pupils’ learning and lead meetings to provide feedback on pupil progress and development.

  • Undertake support activities for teachers as required.

  • Provide guidance to teachers to support pupil development and inclusion.

Supporting the Curriculum:
  • Deliver learning activities to pupils, adjusting according to their responses and needs.

  • Assist pupils with managing hearing equipment and ICT, with direction from the Hub Lead.

  • Ensure teaching assistants have the skills to manage hearing equipment and utilise ICT effectively.

  • Adapt learning resources and environments to be accessible.

Supporting the School:
  • Comply with policies and procedures, including child protection and data protection.

  • Organise out-of-school learning activities and supervise pupils on trips.

  • Develop effective relationships with staff, parents, carers, and external agencies.

  • Attend and participate in regular meetings.

  • Administer First Aid when appropriately trained.

Line Management Responsibilities:
  • Lead and supervise a team of Teaching Assistants under the guidance of the Hub Lead.

  • Provide advice and guidance on best practices and problem-solving.

  • Design and deliver training for the Teaching Assistant team with support from the SENDCo/Hub Lead.

  • Liaise with local authority intake of pre-school hearing-impaired children and families.

  • Enhance school staff’s signing knowledge as required.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Relevant qualifications and experience in supporting hearing-impaired pupils.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and external agencies.
