Reports to Director of Finance \& Operations

Swindon Tuition Centre provides specialist Alternative Provision and educational support for children and young people who are not currently accessing mainstream education. We are seeking an organised, approachable School Business Manager to support our staff and ensure our business and support functions run effectively across our centres.

Working with senior leaders, AP Managers, Finance and HR, you will manage HR employee relations matters, support consistent people practices and line manage allocated support staff. You will also coordinate business administration, budgets, resources and organisational compliance, helping our teams focus on delivering effective educational support.

HR, employee relations and people management

  • Manage HR employee relations matters in line with STC policies, seeking specialist HR advice where required and working within agreed decision\-making authority.

  • Support managers in applying people policies consistently, including attendance, performance and conduct processes, and act as an accessible contact for routine staff queries.

  • Line manage allocated administrative and business support staff, setting objectives, managing workloads and supporting development through regular supervision and appraisals.

  • Support probation reviews, return\-to\-work discussions and attendance management for direct reports, promoting positive communication and staff wellbeing.

  • Work with HR and managers to coordinate recruitment, onboarding and induction, and identify staffing pressures to inform workforce planning.
Business and organisational responsibilities
  • Coordinate central administration and business systems across STC locations, improving processes, information quality and communication between teams.

  • Monitor agreed budgets, expenditure and purchasing, supporting financial planning and value for money within delegated authority.

  • Coordinate premises, maintenance and health and safety arrangements with designated leads, maintaining records and escalating concerns promptly.

  • Maintain oversight of compliance deadlines, policy reviews and audit actions, providing senior leaders with clear information on progress and emerging risks.
About you

You will bring sound judgement, strong organisation and a supportive approach to managing people. You should be comfortable handling sensitive employee matters, balancing priorities and knowing when to involve senior leaders or specialist advisers.

Essential experience and skills

  • Significant experience in business management, operations, administration or a comparable management role, including effective line management.

  • Practical experience of managing employee relations matters and applying people policies fairly and consistently, with appropriate specialist support.

  • Experience managing or monitoring budgets and expenditure, and developing effective administrative systems and processes.

  • Strong organisational, communication and problem\-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.

  • Confidence using spreadsheets, management information and Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace, with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Experience handling sensitive information with discretion and maintaining professional confidentiality. A full UK driving licence and the ability to travel between STC locations.
Desirable
  • Experience in education, Alternative Provision, SEND, children's services or another regulated environment, including knowledge of safeguarding and safer recruitment.

  • A School Business Management, business administration or operations qualification, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Experience of premises and health and safety coordination, inspections or audits, education management information systems such as Arbor, or a growing multi\-site organisation.
