Role overview

The BW Architect is responsible for defining, governing, and implementing the end\-to\-end SAP BW/HANA data architecture for enterprise analytics initiatives. This includes supporting BW systems, integration programs, and enabling scalable reporting aligned with business needs.

Key Responsibilities

1\. Architecture \& Design

• Define BW on HANA / BW/4HANA architecture strategy


• Design data models (InfoProviders, ADSOs, Composite Providers, Open ODS Views)


• Establish data flow architecture between source systems (SAP ECC/S4, non\-SAP) and BW


• Lead data warehousing standards, naming conventions, and best practices

2\. Transformation \& Migration

• Drive BW to HANA/BW/4HANA transformation roadmap


• Identify and implement code pushdown optimizations


• Plan and execute:

o Migration of legacy BW objects

o Simplification and decommissioning strategy

• Assess impact for initiatives like S/4 Transformation \& integrations

3\. Data Integration \& Modeling

• Architect data ingestion frameworks (ODP, SLT, SDA, SDI, APIs)


• Ensure optimal data staging (PSA/ODP) and transformation layers


• Design real\-time / near\-real\-time integration scenarios


• Oversee data harmonization and data quality frameworks

4\. Performance Optimization

• Optimize data models, Queries (BEx, Analysis for Office, SAC), HANA calculations (pushdown logic to DB layer)


• Leverage HANA\-native capabilities (Calculation Views, CDS views where applicable)

5\. Reporting \& Analytics Enablement

• Define architecture for BEx / Analysis for Office, SAP BO (WebI)


• Enable self\-service BI and semantic layer design

6\. Delivery \& Governance

• Provide technical leadership across BW team (developers, leads)


• Review functional specs, technical designs, Code quality


• Ensure alignment with SOW, SLAs, and delivery


• Work closely with Functional teams, Integration teams, Business stakeholders

7\. Stakeholder Management

• Drive client discussions on scope, feasibility, and roadmap planning


• Translate business requirements into scalable data architecture


• Provide inputs for Estimation, Capacity planning, Execution planning

Required Skills

• SAP BW 7\.x and/or BW/4HANA


• SAP HANA (modeling, performance tuning)


• ABAP (for BW routines, transformations)


• Data modeling concepts (LDM, EDW, LSA\+\+, BW/4 architecture)


• ODP, SLT, Flat files, APIs


• BEx / Query Designer, Analysis for Office, SAP BO (WebI)

Preferred skills

• SAP Analytics Cloud


• SAP BDC


• Experience with S/4HANA integration
