Research Engineer in Analytical Chemistry and Metabolomics

Do you enjoy hands\-on analytical chemistry and working with advanced mass spectrometry? At Chalmers Mass Spectrometry Infrastructure (CMSI), you will contribute to a wide range of life science research projects by performing high\-quality targeted and untargeted metabolomics analyses. This is a hands\-on laboratory role for an analytical chemist who enjoys working systematically, maintaining high quality standards and contributing as part of a collaborative infrastructure team.

Information about the division/project

Chalmers Mass Spectrometry Infrastructure (CMSI) is part of the Division of Infrastructures at the Department of Life Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology. CMSI provides advanced mass spectrometry\-based analytical services and expertise, with a particular focus on metabolomics and lipidomics.

We support research projects from academia, healthcare and industry and offer both targeted quantitative metabolomics and untargeted metabolomics workflows. CMSI is also part of the national Metabolomics and Exposomics Platform within SciLifeLab. You will join a team with complementary expertise in analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, metabolomics and data analysis.

You will conllaborate with researchers and users from a broad range of disciplines and contribute analyses that support cutting\-egde research.

Job Description
-------------------

Your main responsibility will be to perform high\-quality analytical work using established targeted and untargeted metabolomics workflows at CMSI.

Your tasks will include:

• Sample preparation for targeted and untargeted metabolomics analyses.


• LC\-MS analysis using established CMSI workflows.


• Operation and monitoring of LC\-MS/MS and LC\-HRMS instrumentation.


• Routine quality control and assessment of analytical performance.


• Documentation of laboratory work and analytical results.


• Contribution to instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, SOPs and quality documentation.


• General laboratory activities required for reliable and efficient operation of the infrastructure.


• Close collaboration with other CMSI staff in the execution of analytical projects.

The focus of the position is on running and ensuring the quality of established analytical workflows. You may also contribute to continuous improvement of existing workflows, while development of new analytical methods is not a primary responsibility of the role.
Contract terms
------------------

Temporary employment until 31 October, 2027\. Preferable starting date: 1 November, 2026\.

Qualifications
------------------

We are looking for one\-two analytical chemists who enjoy practical laboratory work and have a strong interest in mass spectrometry.

The following qualifications are required:

• MSc in analytical chemistry, or an equivalent degree with a strong focus on analytical chemistry.


• Hands\-on experience of LC\-MS\-based analytical work.


• Practical experience of sample preparation and instrumental analysis.


• Good understanding of chromatography and mass spectrometry.


• Ability to independently perform and document laboratory work.


• Good written and spoken English.

The following qualifications are considered meritorious:

• Experience in targeted and/or untargeted metabolomics.


• Experience with UHPLC\-MS/MS and/or UHPLC\-HRMS systems.


• Experience of independently operating and troubleshooting LC\-MS instrumentation.


• Experience in quantitative bioanalysis.


• Experience in systematic quality assurance work, including SOPs and analytical documentation.


• Experience of working with large sample series.


• Experience from a research infrastructure, core facility or other service\-oriented analytical laboratory.


• PhD in analytical chemistry or a closely related field.

You are quality\-conscious, systematic and structured, and and enjoy working carefully and reproducibly according to established quality procedures. You are able to work independently while also collaborating closely with colleagues and contributing to common priorities within the team. As CMSI is a research infrastructure supporting many different projects and users, we also value a service\-oriented approach and good problem\-solving skills.
