Research Assistant

The organisation houses a specialist museum and library collection of national significance, alongside a dedicated research function that informs clinical guidance and professional development.
The Role
We're looking for a Research Assistant to provide cross-team administrative support within the Knowledge and Research Department for our client. This department comprises three teams: the Museum, Library and Information Services, and the Research Team.
This is a varied and hands-on role, ideal for someone who thrives on variety, enjoys working with people, and has a genuine interest in heritage, information services, or research administration.
This is part time role based onsite and offers some hybrid working. The ideal candidate can work 4 or 5 day’s per week.
Key Responsibilities
Museum and Heritage Support
- Welcome visitors, assist with guided tours, and supervise researchers, artists, and writers using the collection
- Support heritage projects, including oral history initiatives—making and editing recordings, and providing project administration
- Assist with the care and presentation of museum spaces, including light cleaning of display cases, repositioning items, and pest monitoring
- Perform circulation tasks using the Library Management System: issuing, renewing, and returning books and resources
- Dispatch items by post and shelve returned materials
- Maintain the library collections in good order through regular shelf-checking and tidying
- Support internal and external events, including open days, special exhibitions, and major annual events such as conferences and ceremonies
- Provide administrative cover for the Knowledge and Research Coordinator (currently Thursdays and Fridays)
- Assist with budget monitoring, expense logging, invoice processing, and credit card reconciliation
The ideal candidate will be organised, detail-oriented, and comfortable juggling different tasks across a small, collaborative team. You enjoy working with people—whether welcoming visitors, supporting colleagues, or liaising with external contacts.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Good customer service experience in a busy, public-facing environment
- Confident with MS Office and able to pick up new systems quickly
- Experience with administrative systems and procedures
- Careful planning, flexibility, and a proactive approach
- Good general level of education
- Experience with website maintenance
- Familiarity with museum or library cataloguing software
- Interest in heritage, archives, or research administration
