An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our nursing team, within the Horton Outpatients department, Horton Hospital. We are looking for a Band 5 Registered Nurse, who has an interest in Trauma \& Orthopaedics, to join our team!

We are a friendly patient centred department delivering high quality compassionate care with integrity and respect within our variety of multi\-specialty clinics, working alongside consultants and specialist nurses.

Our nurses’ roles are varied and include, but are not limited to, acting as patient advocate, chaperoning patients, assisting Consultants during patient examinations and minor outpatient procedures. We strive to deliver excellence and value in patient care.

This post will focused and support the work within our Plaster room setting, but will involve work in some of our other clinics too. We hold outpatient clinics for a wide variety of specialties, and no two days are the same.

The Outpatient’s Department is open 7 days a week, including bank holidays, opening hours from 8am until 6pm on weekdays and morning at weekends

Informal visits are highly recommended and encouraged.

To ensure excellent patient care by planning and implementing the relevant procedures to meet the individual needs of the patients attending the outpatient department and maintaining patient records accordingly.

Be responsible for the assessment of care needs for the patients attending the Outpatients department, including the development, implementation and evaluation of care.

This role will predominantly encompass supporting our busy Trauma clinics, which operates 7 days a week, including weekends and bank holidays. This post will involve working within the plaster room environment once training has been completed and competence has been achieved.

Support the medical teams within their clinics, carrying out all care appropriate to their grade and competency. To contribute to the effective running of clinics, liaising with multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of patient care.

Actively contribute to the continuing development of nursing practice and to act as a mentor for pre and post registration students.

The post holder must be aware of the individuals responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and identify and report, as necessary any untoward incident or accident or potentially hazardous environment.

The key activities/roles for this post in relation to the fracture clinics include, but are not limited to, supporting the effective running of clinic both from the plaster room and/or the clinic base. In terms of plaster room activity, the postholder will be expected to undertake and assist in the application of plaster casts for fractured bones (once competent), undertake wound assessments and wound care when required (including suture removal), offer advice to colleagues (registered \& non\-registered) and patients regarding wounds/wound care, provide information surrounding the care of casts, administer medications as necessary (analgesia, anticoagulants, Entonox), give medication advice (such as VTE and anticoagulants), be involved in the ordering of necessary consumables used in the plaster room.

Role activities in relation to other clinics include, but again are not limited to, chaperoning in clinic, undertaking and documenting physiological observations to aid the Doctors in the direct care of patients (such as height, weight, blood pressure), being actively involved in the care of unwell patients when necessary and supporting their colleagues in these events, carrying out investigations within the department such as phlebotomy or urinalysis/pregnancy testing or sign\-posting patients to other department when the investigations are external to the department for example X\-ray or ECG. The post holder will also be expected (once competent) to undertake Wound assessment/wound care in the other clinics that require it as part of the patient journey for those clinics for example vascular or plastics. The registered nurse, once competent, may also assist Doctors with procedures in clinic, such as Skin/Tissue biopsy, “See \& Treat” clinics and Banding as part of the colorectal clinic and offer post\-procedure care/advice to the patient once the procedure is complete.

The Registered Nurse is also necessary to ensure staff staffing levels across the full working / operational times of the department. The post\-holder will also be expected to support both medical and nursing students who may be on placement/education days in the department, helping them to have a positive experience of the Outpatient environment. Registered nurses within the outpatient department act as role models and are a source of support and leadership for their junior and/or non\-registered colleagues, undertaking annual appraisals with a small number of junior colleagues, and being involved in wellbeing activity/tasks with the same small group of junior colleagues; it is expected that on occasion the registered nurse may co\-ordinate the department as the senior nurse.
