Private Client Fee Earner — Position Overview:

You will manage a varied caseload of probate matters from initial instruction through to final estate distribution, with minimal supervision, while also supporting senior members of the Probate team and Partners on more complex estate administration matters.

Key Responsibilities of the Private Client Fee Earner:

  • Managing a full caseload of estate administration matters

  • Collecting in estate assets and identifying liabilities

  • Liaising with banks, accountants, valuers and financial institutions to obtain date of death valuations

  • Preparing applications for grants of probate and letters of administration

  • Liaising with the Probate Registry and handling administration formalities

  • Preparing estate accounts and managing distributions to beneficiaries and legatees

  • Dealing with estate tax reporting and compliance matters, including liaison with HMRC

  • Providing clear and practical advice to clients and executors throughout the administration process

  • Overseeing onboarding, file opening, compliance, file closing and archiving

  • Maintaining accurate electronic files, drafting correspondence and handling enquiries

Requirements of the Private Client Fee Earner


  • CILEX qualification, STEP qualification, or equivalent experience preferred but not essential

  • Relevant private client experience within a law firm or similar practice

  • Good academic background including 3 A-levels (minimum BBB) and GCSE Maths and English at grade A*–C / 9–4 or equivalent

  • Strong administrative and organisational skills

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel and Word

  • Excellent written and spoken English

  • Strong numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail

  • Confident IT user

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Discreet and professional when handling confidential information

  • Good telephone manner and client care skills

  • Positive attitude, flexibility and willingness to learn
