About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to act as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for electrical compliance across our high‑hazard manufacturing facility.
This is a critical role responsible for ensuring our electrical systems, infrastructure, and processes meet all relevant UK legislation and regulatory standards, including those specific to explosives manufacturing environments. You will play a key role in maintaining safe operations, improving reliability, and shaping the site’s electrical strategy.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Act as the technical SME for electrical compliance, ensuring alignment with legislation such as the Electricity at Work Regulations and DSEAR.
- Take ownership as the Responsible Person for:
o DSEAR (including ATEX requirements)
o Electrical engineering standards across the facility
o Electrical safety requirements under the Explosive Regulations
- Define, develop, and promote electrical specifications and standards for new and existing plant and equipment.
- Manage contractor activity relating to electrical engineering on site.
- Maintain and develop the site’s electrical documentation, including drawings, manuals, and standards.
- Identify and manage electrical obsolescence programmes.
- Define and support the delivery of electrical training requirements for the engineering team.
- Lead continuous improvement of plant reliability, safety systems, and engineering practices.
- Keep up to date with changes in legislation, standards, and best practice within electrical engineering.
- Contribute to and implement the site’s electrical strategy in line with the Site Development Plan.
- Manage small capital projects (typically under £250k).
We are looking for someone who brings both strong technical capability and a proactive, safety‑led mindset.
Essential Experience \& Knowledge
- Minimum 4 years’ experience within a recognised electrical engineering trade
- Experience working in a high‑hazard or regulated environment
- Strong knowledge of UK electrical legislation (e.g. Electricity at Work Regulations, DSEAR)
- Experience managing contractors and supporting engineering delivery
- IT skills including AutoCAD (or similar)
- Understanding of risk assessments and engineering safety principles
- Time‑served apprenticeship with HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering
- 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations
- Electrical Test \& Inspection (e.g. City \& Guilds 2391\-52 or equivalent)
- CompEx certification (EX1–4 or 5–6, ideally EX14\)
- Full UK driving licence and right to work in the UK
- Electrical design qualification (e.g. C\&G 2396\)
- HV Authorised Person
- IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent)
- Work in a highly specialised manufacturing environment where safety and engineering excellence are critical
- Play a key role in ensuring compliance and continuous improvement
- Be part of a collaborative engineering team with opportunities to influence site strategy
